The Academic Support Center at NYFA-LA offers learning support services and referrals through which students of all abilities can address their long and short-term academic needs in a supportive and relaxed environment. Individual tutoring in most academic subjects, including English as a second language, is available on a scheduled basis, as is skill-specific tutoring to help students develop and improve their study habits and writing techniques.
A valuable resource of the Academic Support Center is the campus film library, which is designed to give students access to independent study and guided research, and to enhance their understanding of the art and history of visual storytelling. The library supports the instructional needs of students by providing a multi-media environment where any student can engage in independent study, as to increase students’ understanding of filmmaking and the fine arts, and thereby increase the quality of the students’ work. Reference materials, general aesthetic theory and practice, photographic history and theory, biographies of photographers and multimedia artists who have created successful careers, and other job related resources are made available to every student.
NYFA instructors may refer students to the Academic Support Center for skill reinforcement and students may also arrange for tutoring at the Center on an as need basis. Referrals to Los Angeles area based professionals are also available for mental health counseling and other support services a student’s individual needs may require. The Academic Support Center encourages students to become active, independent and confident learners through academic counseling and the identification of learning styles
