The New York Film Academy has joined forces with Rolling Stone, one of the most respected magazines covering the music and entertainment industries to train the next generation of music video creators.

The Four and Eight Week Rolling Stone Music Video Workshops give students the opportunity to make their own music videos in a hands-on, intensive program. Taught by professional music video makers and experts, students learn how to conceptualize, work with a record label, collaborate with a musical artist or band, produce, shoot, direct, and edit their own music videos.

By its very nature, the music video is stylistic, expressive, evocative, and free of many of the constraints of standard narrative filmmaking. Making music videos can be a great proving ground for aspiring film and television directors helping theme develop a personal style. Accomplished filmmakers, like David Fincher (Se7en), Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich), Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), Michael Bay (Transformers), McG (Charlie’s Angles), and Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) began their careers by making music videos. And established directors like Martin Scorsese, Michael Apted, and John Landis have chosen to direct music videos as a way to explore the possibilities of the medium.

COURSE OVERVIEW
The Rolling Stone/New York Film Academy Music Video workshops give students the all-around creative and technical experience and training necessary to make their own music videos. Students in the program receive hundreds of hours of hands-on instruction and actual production experience. The curriculum integrates intensive study in all the major filmmaking disciplines including cinematography, directing, screenwriting, producing, and editing. In both the four and eight week programs, students write, direct, and edit their own music videos and work on crew of their classmates’ productions.

Our program is for people who have the passion to plunge into full-time music video production, and to commit themselves to a focused and demanding curriculum.

No previous experience is required. However, participants must work with self-discipline, energy and mutual respect.

As in all New York Film Academy programs, the music video course emphasizes hands-on learning. Music Video directing classes are not theoretical explorations; they are practical workshops designed to put students in the director's chair as quickly as possible. The New York Film Academy encourages students to take creative risks and find their own voices as visual artists.

Students complete the music video workshops with skills in all areas of making music videos, an enormous amount of production experience, examples of their own work, and a certificate of completion.

Projects Each Student will Complete:

Music Video One: Group Project (4 and 8 week workshop)
Each student edits their own version of a music video produced by the class. The concept for the video will created by the class under the supervision of the Music Video Craft teacher. Performance footage of the band or artist will be shot by the class as a group. Each student will have the opportunity to shoot “B-Roll” without the performer or band for their own version of the video.

Music Video Two: Music and Image (4 and 8 week workshop)
Students will each choose a continuous selection of music from one to four minutes. Each will write, shoot, direct, and edit a non-performance based music video. The video may tell a story, follow an experimental structure, or explore a theme through montage.

Music Video Three: Final Project (8 week workshop only)
Using all the techniques taught in class, each student will conceive, produce, write, direct and edit an original music video. Students will be expected to identify and collaborate with a band or musical artist in the making of the video. The goal of this project is for each student to finish a professional quality music video of his or her own creation.

Equipment:
Students will be trained on and make their music videos using professional HD cameras, lights, and playback gear.
