NYFA Teaches Local Youngsters

Published on August 3, 2012

Students who attend after-school programs at East Side Community High School and Marte Valle Secondary School on the Lower East Side of Manhattan participated in a Time Warner Cable Connect A Million Minds workshop with the New York Film Academy on May 23. Students learned about important technical roles in movies and how STEMĀ impacts the world of filmmaking.

During the interactive workshop, students were divided into groups and tasked to shoot a scene, with each individual trying his or her hand as a director, cinematographer, assistant camera, lighting person and actor. The scenes were designed to enable students to understand how math and science are important in the utilization of fast and slow motion, control over depth of field, and through the use of green-screen technology. The workshop concluded in a screening room, where the students viewed their work of art and were also treated to a presentation on 3D animation and special effects.

Overall, we had a wonderful time with the youngsters. Check out the video slide show of the event!
