LIVING COSTS (2008 PRICES)

Students should estimate the following costs for housing and meals. The New York Film Academy can make additional housing suggestions, and dormitory facilities are available at most summer workshops.

NEW YORK CITY

Our NYC Housing Coordinator helps students find safe and convenient accommodations within walking distance of the Academy or a short ride on mass transit.

Average cost for a furnished shared apartment in New York City ranges from $850-1500/month per person. Furnished studio apartments start at $1800/month. Private rooms in a residential housing facility are $900 to $1500 per month. It's possible to find less expensive options if you are willing to live further away and can arrive a week or two early to visit places.

Hostels and hotels are available for short visits $30- $100 per night.
Subways and buses are $2.00 per ride or a Metrocard can be purchased for $81 for 30 days of unlimited rides.

Food expenses may vary depending on eating habits.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

Students with cars can find a variety of apartments from $700 and up, depending on the length of stay, location, and size of the apartment. Filmmaking students may find a car to be useful in their productions.

Oakwood Apartments, across the street from Universal Studios, offers one and two-bedroom apartments with kitchenettes. Prices range from $1400 to $3200 and up depending on number of rooms and amenities.
Students should expect to spend $700 and up per month on food expense.

LONDON, ENGLAND

Our London Housing Co-ordinator can help students find safe and convenient accommodation within walking distance of the Academy, or a short ride on public transport.

Average costs for London accommodation are as follows:

Furnished shared flat- from £500 per month
Furnished studio apartments- from £700-£800 per month
Private room in a shared house- from £500 per month

It’s possible to find less expensive options if you are willing to live further away and can arrive a week or two early to visit places.

Hostels are available for short visits, ranging from £17-£30 per night

London has a wide range of hotels, from budget (starting around £40 per night) to luxury.
Travel in London

Travel on the underground  (or ‘tube’) is divided into zones. Zone 1, where the Film Academy is located is central London and Zone 6 is the outer suburbs. A journey from Zone 1 to Zones 1-4 costs £3, and to Zones 5 or 6 is £4.

A day travel card for Zones 1-2 costs £4.90.
Any local bus journey in London, including all zones and night buses, costs £1.50.
A day bus travel card costs £3.50
Students can buy an Oyster Card, a pay-before-you-go electronic card, which offers a discount on London buses and tubes. One-year students can get a substantial discount with a Student Oyster Card.

Food

Expect to spend  £200-£400 per month on food, but this of course will increase if students are fond of eating out, and decrease if all meals are self-catered.

SUMMER LOCATIONS

For Summer programs, students living in on-campus housing should confirm their arrival and departure dates with the Admissions Office. Depending on the date and location, the arrival day may include orientation, room assignments, key distribution, and registration.
Off-campus students may be required to register along with the resident students on that day. The final day of the summer programs is usually reserved for packing up and departures. Students clean and check-out of their rooms by noon.

INSURANCE

As medical costs can be unexpectedly high, the New York Film Academy strongly advises students to have health insurance coverage for the duration of any New York Film Academy Workshop.

Students may choose to find a policy on their own, or they may contact one of the providers below for short-term coverage.

All films created at the New York Film Academy are the property of the students who made them. The New York Film Academy reserves the right to make copies of students' work to use for promotional purposes. Final films and copies of them must include the following credit: Produced at the New York Film Academy.
