The main character of any movie drives the story forward. For many writers, the process of script development starts with the protagonist or hero of the story. If your character is less than specific, lacks in unique character traits, or is simply not engaging it is often difficult for the story to unfold, and certainly a flat character won’t allow the audience to become invested in his plight. In this course, students will work to develop a character rich in layers who will fascinate and intrigue.
Through the first half of the course, students will work to develop the hero of their stories. With a strong character, students will be able to develop specific integral scenes for their scripts including the opening scene, plot-point one, plot-point two, the climax and resolution throughout the remainder of the course. With the major turning points fleshed out, students can leave the workshop ready to complete the screenplay with greater ease.
Students are required to submit an outline or treatment prior to the first class. If you are unfamiliar with screenplay outlines and treatments, it is recommended that you first complete New York Film Academy’s online "Treatment Writing" course.
