4-Week Digital Photography
Tuition: $ 5,150
3 COLLEGE CREDITS*
*Through the New York State Board of Regents' National PONSI Program, the New York Film Academy carries college credit recommendations to over 1500 colleges and universities.
Photography students at New York Film Academy develop the skills necessary to research, compose, and capture digital photographic projects in a hands-on course. Students are encouraged to be creative, but are also taught to think of each project as a concise statement of artistic, documentary, and/or journalistic intent. They expand their repertoire of techniques with light and shadow as they work with professional lighting and grip hardware, as well as inexpensive and unconventional practical sources of light and shadow.
No significant prior experience in photography is assumed. The program brings everyone to the same level very quickly, beginning with the fundamentals and filling the inevitable gaps in the understanding of those who have some experience.
CLASSES
Shooting LabThis lab is a hands-on opportunity for students to learn professional techniques on locations and in the studio; it covers a wide range of genres, aesthetic, logistical and technical challenges. The students work directly with the instructor to apply concepts to assignments of increasing complexity. Field trips to photograph the infinite variety of locations and subjects will play a major part of this course.
Shooting locations at the Universal Studios camp may include: reportage in a cityscape, portraits at Lake Hollywood, landscapes near the Hollywood sign, Polaroid portraits, a fashion shoot on Sunset and Vine, a portraiture session on the beach.
The New York camp will take advantage of the vast number of neighborhoods, bridges, Central Park and unique locations that make New York one of the best cities in the world.
Digital Imaging
Digital photography gives us the ability to manipulate images in ways that were never possible with film. Photoshop, Lightroom, Digital Photo Pro and other applications will be used to explore digital imaging, and to create the best images possible.
Class time will be spent shooting on field trips, lab activities will include various technical demonstrations by the instructor followed by working on images using the techniques demonstrated.
Assignments may include: color correction by the numbers, adding depth to images using layers, creating panoramic images, converting RAW files and batch processing, night photography, light painting and preparing a web portfolio.
HISTORY & THEORY
This course is an introduction to major conceptual trends and ideas in the history of photography, from its invention to the present day; including technological, artistic, social, cultural and journalistic currents of the medium. This course will also include scheduled time for field trips, gallery viewings and museum visits.
Assignments will include examinations of such photographers as Atget, Daugerre, Brassai, Eggleston, Richard Avedon, Ansel Adams, Irving Penn, Paul Ockenfels, and Platon, among others.
Documentary and Fine Art
This workshop will explore Documentary Photography as well as photography as fine art form. Students will become acquainted with principles of graphic design, composition, color and perception. We will discuss the distinctions between art and commerce. Students will conceptualize, shoot, edit, process, present and discuss in class their work, which will derive from weekly assignments. There will be a few readings and group discussions. The course culminates with a final body of finished photographs.
Assignments may include: discovering the city, pattern and rhythm, city lights, environmental portraits, a day in the life, behind the scenes and style in the street.
