NYFA students pose with their certificates of completion

Young Storytellers

The Young Storytellers Foundation develops literacy through the art of storytelling. Using group exercises and one-on-one mentoring, it provides underserved children in the public school system an opportunity to write stories and see them brought to life through performance. The Young Storytellers Foundation's mission is to inspire children and teenagers to discover the power of their own voice. Students work with professional acting and writing mentors to fully explore and express their individual creative voices. The Foundation's belief is simple: that each student is talented, creative, and has something to say.

NYFA Collaborates with the Young Storytellers Foundation

"We have always wanted to play a bigger role in the community and contribute to inner city programs. Collaborating with the Young Storytellers Foundation was the perfect opportunity," says Dan Mackler, Director of NYFA, Los Angeles. In the summer of 2011, NYFA opened its doors to talented YSF participants who have a passion for storytelling. In one week, students wrote, produced, directed, shot, and edited their own films under the guidance of NYFA professionals. The program concluded with a final screening of all HD films shot on the Universal Studios' back lot.

"People telling me that I have talent, and helping me to progress that talent…That's mind-blowing!"
Anthony (student, August 2011 program)

"Am I scared to do this? Yeah, I'm scared to hell! But I came here and I showed you what I can do!"
Bam (student, August 2011 program)

"This is a life-changing week for these students. I believe that wholeheartedly."

Natiya Guin (Teacher, Animo Jackie Robinson High School)
"I grew up in South Central so I've seen a lot and I have tons of stories to tell. That's what I came here to do and I'm doing it!"
Yordy (Student, August 2011 program)

"In creating your own stories, you start inside yourself. Sometimes you start with a little voice. Then the voice gets stronger, and when that voice starts to take wing, you can't stop it! That was my experience working with YSF students."
John Henry Richardson (Acting Instructor, NYFA)

Coming into the program I think they thought they had something to say but they didn't think anybody cared about it.
By the end of the week, they had started to believe in their own voice. This was a huge leap for them."

Bill Thompson (Executive Director, Young Storytellers Foundation)
