New York Film Academy Guest Speakers
Ronald “Ron” Meyer, COO and President of Universal Studios, held a Q&A for students on the Universal lot in August 2011. Meyer shared stories from his youth, from his humble upbringing, dropping out of school at 15, joining the marines at 17, and working as a messenger at a talent agency. He soon began working as an agent at Paul Kohner Agency, followed by five years at the William Morris Agency. In 1975, he and fellow agents launched Creative Artists Agency.
Meyer repeatedly emphasized that the best way to get started as an actor is to work with an agent. He said that, finding “good representation is the best thing you can do, and the hardest job you will ever have.” He also admitted that many people wanting to work in the film business will never make it. His advice? Stick around, because eventually your competition will “all die or quit… accept as few ‘nos’ as possible.”
