New York Film Academy Musical Theatre School Presents 'Cabaret'

New York Film Academy Musical Theatre School Presents "Cabaret"

May 18, 2016 Life was a Cabaret this past weekend for the New York Film Academy Musical Theatre School. From May 13th through the 15th, 2016, at the historic ATA Theatre in Manhattan, the NYFA Musical Theatre program put on its fifth main-stage musical production.

This spring's production was of the Tony Award winning musical, Cabaret, which showcased the remarkable talents of our students in all three areas of dance, acting, and singing.

Cabaret is based off of the book by Joe Masteroff and based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood. John Kander wrote the original music, with lyrics from Fred Ebb.

Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis were rising to power, the story is based in the nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub, and revolves around the young English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with the young American writer Cliff Bradshaw.

As for NYFA's production of Cabaret, Nathan Brewer directed the performance, with choreography by Deidre Goodwin and Music Direction by Anna Ebbesen and Kevin David Thomas.

The cast interpreted the material in an exceptionally professional way, putting each night's audience in the palm of their hand and moving the story along with such verve and incandescent energy that they earned the standing ovations they received each and every performance.

"Director Nathan Brewer gave the musical a revived new framework which brought tears, tingles, laughs, and gasps to everyone lucky enough to be at the theatre to enjoy this thrilling production." said NYFA Musical Theatre Chair, Mark Olsen.

"Deidre Goodwin's choreography was exceptional, boosting the dance elements to great heights of professionalism and causing numerous audience members to exclaim that they felt they were at a Broadway show," added Olsen. "Music Director Anna Ebbesen put together an ace team of top flight musicians who, under her guidance, provided some of the best musical moments we've heard in a long time. The band was extraordinarily well received."

This distinguished performance marks yet another successful and memorable treatment of a mainstream musical. Now, with classics like Cabaret, Spring Awakening, and Chess in its credits, the Academy looks forward to its next main-stage production.
