Summer camps for 2021 are currently being planned for both in-person and online options. However, due to safety concerns surrounding COVID-19, NYFA will be unable to offer housing for in-person teen camps. Families will need to secure their own housing for campers and provide any necessary off-campus supervision, if traveling to a NYFA teen summer camp from another city, state or country. All after-school and weekend camps will be conducted online, until further notice. To view all camps and workshops offered, please click here.

6-Week Filmmaking Camp for Teens

2021 Locations: New York City, Los Angeles
The New York Film Academy’s 6-Week Filmmaking Camp provides teenagers with the chance to create, critique, and refine their own films. Throughout their time at the camp each student will write, direct, shoot, and edit four short projects using HDSLR cameras, professional light and sound equipment, and state-of-the-art digital tools. As with all NYFA programs the focus is on hands-on learning. Students are expected to immerse themselves fully in the arts of directing, writing, editing, cinematography, and production. At the end of each week student’s films will be screened and critique in class with the instructor.

• First Four Weeks: The first four weeks are structured around the production of three short films of increasing complexity. Students attend class either in the morning or afternoon Monday through Friday, and shoot their films with supervision during the other half of each day. Weekends are reserved for writing, relaxation, and organized trips and activities.

• Last Two Weeks: Each student devotes the fifth and sixth weeks of the program to directing and editing a longer film of up to six minutes in length. The project does not employ sync sound, focusing on the art of visual storytelling. However, students will create soundtracks that may include ambience, voice over, music, and sound effects.

There is additional time for preparation and one-on-one consultation during pre-production of their films. Students take advantage of this time to polish their scripts, to scout locations, and to cast.

Students will work in groups to help each other complete their films. Students will direct four films throughout their six weeks, but will serve on the crew for other student’s films. This allows students to build the essential production skills needed to complete any project.

Students receive a certificate upon successful completion of the program.
