Graduated from NYFA NYC Campus in 2004

James Friend is a British cinematographer, best known for his work on Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, in addition to the BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography.

In 2019, he won an ASC award for Patrick Melrose (2018), and also won a BAFTA TV award for Best Photography & Lighting: Fiction for Rillington Place (2016).

Friend is also known for his work on Willow (2022), Your Honor (2020), The Acolyte (2024).In 2024 Friend received an Honorary Fellowship from The Royal Photographic Society.
In 2025 he was the cinematographer on Ballad of a Small Player starring Colin Farrell and Tilda Swinson and Ghostwriter directed by JJ Abrams starring Jenna Ortega, Glen Powell and Samuel L. Jackson.
