Tending to our overall wellness is an essential ingredient for success in college. NYFA’s Counseling Services provide short-term solution focused therapy to students currently enrolled in long-term academic programs. Mental health services are available at every campus, and counseling is free and confidential. For students needing long-term or specialty services not available at NYFA counseling, we provide referrals to specialists in the nearby community. The NYFA student health insurance plan (NYFASHIP) provides excellent coverage for inpatient and outpatient treatment of mental health disorders.
At NYFA, we encourage you to start thinking about how you can take care of your mental health even before you arrive. If you have a medical or mental health condition that requires medication, please plan in advance for how you will manage your healthcare while at NYFA. For incoming students who know they will need therapy upon arriving on campus, please contact Counseling Services in advance of your arrival so we can provide guidance and support.

NYFA Counseling Services Mission
Counseling at NYFA aims to support current students to collaboratively explore and understand personal issues in a neutral, compassionate setting. We support students through short-term counseling here on campus and by connecting them to long-term or specialized therapy and psychiatry within the community. Our aim is to promote healthy mental and emotional lives for our students by advocating early connection to care. Counseling provides support to the larger NYFA community through staff consultation and regular training related to identifying, supporting, and addressing the mental health needs of NYFA students with a particular focus on suicide prevention.
