NYFA believes filmmaking is at its core an essential human activity- telling a story to others, expressing your point of view of the world, sharing your ideas with an audience. The relationship between filmmaking and technology has always been a dynamic one, pushing the other forward and opening up new possibilities. From Silent to Sound, Black and White to Color, Celluloid to Digital and many other innovations in between. For creators, technology is additive, giving them new tools to do things that were not possible before or making them much more efficient and accessible to more artists. Just as new technology has helped film artists tell their stories, AI has been used for many years to help with the so-called “busy work” that frees the artist to focus on the bigger picture as well as the finer details. Now, generative AI can begin to act as a sort of “collaborator,” helping filmmakers to marshal their thoughts, create prototypes, or iterate versions of the works as they finalize their vision. We consider the cinematic use of AI to be an exciting tool for filmmakers, not a replacement for human creativity or collaboration.
