Program DescriptionCamp Name: 4-Week Online 3D Animation Summer Camp for Teens
The 4-Week Online Animation Program is designed to adapt the immersive, hands-on experience of our on-campus animation program into an interactive remote learning environment. This course provides students with the fundamental skills needed to create engaging 3D animated stories, from modeling and rigging to animation and storytelling, all while working from home or any remote setting. With an emphasis on practical exercises using industry-standard software like Autodesk Maya, students will learn how to create high-quality animations with the tools and resources they already have access to.
Classes are conducted live via Zoom, where students will receive real-time instruction, participate in discussions, and engage in guided animation exercises. Each student will be provided with an NYFA email address, which they will use to log in to Zoom and access course materials.

Core Subjects
The following core subjects are included:
- Modeling: In this foundational subject, students will begin by creating props, followed by the modeling of a simple character. This process will teach students how to build the digital assets necessary for storytelling, focusing on the technical aspects of shaping and refining 3D models to serve as the basis for animation.
- Texturing: In this subject, students will learn how to apply textures and materials to their 3D models to bring them to life. Emphasis will be placed on UV mapping, surface detailing, and using textures to enhance visual storytelling by giving models depth, realism, and personality.
- Rigging: Students will apply joints and controllers to their character models, enabling them to move and perform realistic actions. This foundational technique ensures the character can express emotions and physicality, making them a dynamic and believable protagonist in their animated stories.
- Animation: Using Autodesk Maya, the industry-standard software, students will dive into the art of animation. They will learn how to animate their character with proper weight, attitude, and motion, ensuring their protagonist moves in a way that is believable, engaging, and advances the story.
- Writing: In this subject, students will focus on writing a simple yet effective story. Emphasis is placed on their character’s goal, the obstacles they face, and how the narrative structure ensures the audience remains engaged. By exploring the character’s journey, students will lay the groundwork for their animated short, ensuring a clear, compelling narrative. In addition, students will be introduced to the principles of storyboarding, learning how to visually map out their stories and translate written ideas into engaging visual sequences that support the overall storytelling process.
Throughout the course, students will be guided by the instructor during the final stages of their animation project. This supervision ensures that all elements come together effectively for the final presentation. The instructor will provide constructive feedback, ensuring that students refine their models, rigs, and animations and develop their work into a polished final piece. Students will also engage in peer collaboration and feedback sessions, simulating a real-world animation studio environment in an online format.
Final Project
By the end of the program, each student will have created a short animated film, typically 60–90 seconds in length. This project will showcase the student’s ability to model, rig, animate, and tell a story using 3D animation. The final short film will combine all the technical skills learned during the course, and students will have the opportunity to apply their creativity in building a cohesive, engaging animated sequence.
The final project will not only demonstrate the student’s technical proficiency but will also showcase their storytelling abilities through their protagonist’s journey. The completed film will serve as an important portfolio piece, highlighting the student’s understanding of animation fundamentals and their ability to produce a polished animated short from start to finish.
Throughout the program, students will work both individually and collaboratively, ensuring a well-rounded experience that mirrors the workflow of a professional animation studio. By the end of the program, each student will have a deeper understanding of the animation process, an enhanced skill set, and a strong portfolio piece to showcase their work.
