Whether one is just out of high school or considering pursuing a graduate degree, attending a degree program provides students with the opportunity to commit themselves to an intensive regimen of classes, coursework, and projects. The New York Film Academy offers a wide range of degree programs that allow students to focus on the development of their chosen craft, whether it be Filmmaking, Acting for Film, Photography, Game Design, or another one of our many Visual and Performing Arts programs.
The Academy offers all of our degree programs at our Los Angeles campus while students can also earn an MFA or BFA Degree in Filmmaking, Acting, or Photography at the Academy’s South Beach campus. In addition, students also have the opportunity to attend a one- or two-year conservatory program at our campus in New York City and apply their credits for advanced standing in a degree program.
Master of Fine Arts Overview
In the arts, a Master of Fine Arts or MFA is the highest degree a student can achieve as students generally spend two years intensely studying and mastering their chosen area of art. To enroll in an MFA program at the Academy, a student must have a Bachelor’s degree from a post-secondary institution that is recognized by the United States Department of Education. While students do not need to have a bachelor’s degree in the same area of study for which they are applying, they should have a strong background in the arts and also submit a Creative Portfolio that demonstrates that they are able to study at the graduate level.
Students that have received their bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a foreign institution and want to apply to an MFA program at the Academy are required to supply a credentials comparison evaluation of the work completed as an undergraduate. Bachelor of Fine Arts Overview
Designed for students who wish to earn a bachelor’s degree while concentrating heavily on a particular craft, the BFA programs combine intensive hands-on education in a student’s chosen craft with foundational courses in the Liberal Arts and Sciences that provide students with the critical thinking skills that will help students to achieve their professional goals after graduation. The curriculum is thus divided with two-thirds of a student’s course load focused on immersing students in the many facets of their chosen discipline with the remainder focused on the Humanities and Sciences.
Unlike many other BFA programs, students have the option to complete the Academy’s BFA programs in only three years if they choose not to take summer breaks. If a student does opt to take summer breaks, the program takes four years to complete.
All students pursuing an undergraduate Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the New York Film Academy must be proficient in English and have earned a high school diploma or an acceptable equivalent. In addition to the Supporting Materials required—which consist of a completed application form, proof of English proficiency, SAT or ACT scores, two letters of recommendation, and a narrative statement—each applicant must submit a Creative Portfolio that illustrates the applicant’s ability to take on undergraduate level study, and shows a potential for success within his or her chosen profession.
