AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CINEMATOGRAPHERS INTERVIEWS NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY (NYFA) CINEMATOGRAPHY INSTRUCTOR SUKI MEDENCEVIC

Professional director of photography and New York Film Academy (NYFA) Cinematography instructor Suki Medencevic, ASC, ASBiH, SAS was recently profiled by American Cinematographer Magazine.

In addition to teaching cinematography students at New York Film Academy’s Burbank-based campus, Medencevic has worked steadily in the film industry since his first feature film job in 1994, both shooting and working in the camera department for numerous features, television shows, commercials, made-for-TV films, and documentaries.

In 2010, Medencevic joined the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), the cultural, educational, and professional organization founded in Hollywood in 1919 to bring together professional cinematographers for advancements and advocation of the medium. In 1920 the ASC founded the magazine publication American Cinematographer, which focuses on art and cinematography and in its first 100 years has evolved to cover everything from foreign films to music videos.

In their June 2019 issue, American Cinematographer showcased Medencevic in its Close-Up feature, interviewing him in a comprehensive Q&A format. Medencevic spoke about first studying the art form in Belgrade, Serbia from renowned European cinematographers, before delving into his transition to working professionally in the American film industry.

Additionally, Medencevic cites Jaroslav Kučera, Vittorio Storaro, Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki, and Roger Deakins as his favorite cinematographers, and the films Apocalypse Now and Enter the Dragon as two films that made strong impressions on him as a child. He also relayed some advice he once received from another professional cinematographer: “‘If you want to be a cinematographer, don’t waste your time doing anything else.’”

Medencevic’s colleagues in NYFA’s cinematography department are thrilled to see ASC profile the talented artist, and weren’t at all surprised he was chosen for their Close-Up feature. “Suki is incredibly versatile as an instructor,” says Mike Williamson, Associate Chair of Cinematography at NYFA-Los Angeles. “He brings a high level of technical sophistication to the program, no doubt informed by his role as a member of the ASC Technology Committee. Recently he’s helped us develop the curriculum and integrate new material into some of our lighting classes.”

Williamson adds, “Suki has a strong connection with his students, and we’re pleased to have him as a member of our faculty.”

New York Film Academy congratulates Cinematography instructor Suki Medencevic on his recent profile in American Cinematographer Magazine and encourages everyone to read the full interview here.

New York Film Academy (NYFA) Holds Acting for Film Workshop in Shanghai, China

Earlier this month, New York Film Academy (NYFA) held a five-day Acting for Film intensive workshop in Shanghai, China. The workshop, which ran from July 15 – July 20, was taught by Anne Moore, NYFA-LA Associate Chair of Acting, and focused on the Meisner technique. The workshop culminated in filmed monologues and scenes.

Shanghai China July 2019

Shanghai China July 2019“At this point in my life, it’s very hard to find people that still inspire me,” says Mike Wietecha, one of the students from the class. “Ms. Moore definitely inspired me as a teacher and and an actor. I can’t remember ever learning this much useful information in such a short amount of time.

“Thank you for an amazing week,” he adds.

The workshop took place on the Shanghai Theatre Academy Campus, and had a dozen students, as well as a Chinese translator. Half of the scenes were filmed in English, and half of the scenes were filmed in Chinese. The program was organized by Dr. Joy Zhu, PhD, NYFA Executive Vice President, China Region, along with an alum from the the NYFA MFA program.

“It was very exciting to see how receptive the students were to the acting techniques and exercises I put forth,” says Moore. “They were not only able to grasp these concepts, but also able to apply them to their scene work. It was amazing how much they grew and learned in one week.”

Photo Arts Conservatory at New York Film Academy (NYFA) Holds Photo Assisting/Digital Tech Workshop

On Saturday, July 13, Photo Arts Conservatory at New York Film Academy (NYFA) held a Photo Assisting/Digital Tech workshop at our Los Angeles campus. Eight students had the opportunity to participate in a simulated real-world environment with professional models from Nomad.

Students were able to make a mock-campaign shoot for a jeans brand! Students began by creating a mood board and style guide for the mock “client” before building lighting setups and tethering the shoot to Capture One.

LA Photo Assist Digitech Workshop 2019

NYFA Photography instructors on hand included Amanda Rowan and Alyson Aliano. Students participating in the workshop included Maddie Smith, Matthew Van Scoter, Eric Magana, Keyao Zhu, Doudou Lin, and Kuangyu Lin.

The workshop students were joined by guest artist Zen Sekizawa, who played the “client.” Sekizawa is a well-known commercial photographer in Los Angeles, and she was generous in her interpretation of what a “client” would expect for the shoot. She gave honest feedback to students who took on different roles, including the photographer, the photo assistant, and the digital tech.

“I had a great time and learned a lot,” says BFA Photography student Matthew Van Scoter. “It was very hands-on, and I enjoyed learning about all the small details that I might have overlooked, from setting up the equipment in a timely manner to the workflow of Capture One.”

Van Scoter adds, “This workshop was an absolutely amazing way to get a lot of industry knowledge. It was also really fun at the same time.”

New York Film Academy (NYFA) Filmmaking Alum Sara Seligman Premieres Coyote Lake Starring Riverdale’s Camila Mendes

Coyote Lake, the feature filmmaking debut of New York Film Academy (NYFA) Filmmaking alum Sara Seligman, is having its US premiere on August 2 before screening for the public in a limited theatrical release. Written and directed by Seligman, the film stars, Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee Adriana Barraza (Amores Perros, Thor), Camila Mendes (Riverdale, The Perfect Date), and Manny Pérez (Homeland, Luke Cage).

The film is an intense thriller about a mother and daughter who rob and drown drug runners in their home near the border between Texas and Mexico. One night, two drug runners take them hostage, unaware of exactly who they’re dealing with. Coyote Lake began as Seligman’s first-year thesis, a 17-minute short she made while attending the 2-Year Filmmaking conservatory at NYFA’s New York campus, which she co-wrote with fellow NYFA classmate Ian Cobb. Seligman was inspired by an old newspaper article Seligman’s mother described to her about a French daughter and mother during World War I who killed soldiers in a very similar manner as Coyote Lake’s protagonists. The parent-child psychology and dynamic between the mother and daughter interested her even more than their sensationalist story.

Sara Seligman Coyote Lake

“While murder is obviously very far from a ‘normal’ upbringing,” Seligman states in the film’s Director’s Statement, “this story was ultimately about one’s coming-of-age: learning about yourself and who you want to become, which felt like a universally relatable theme I could explore.”

However, Seligman still felt there was more story than what a short film could explore. “I always knew,” she continues, “that there was much more to discover in this story, and that’s why I decided to write the feature version. I wanted to explore all the little details of that mother-daughter relationship. But what the thesis film lacked, and what I wanted in the feature, was for this story to happen in the present day, in a world that was relevant to me, and everyone watching.”

Seligman than adapted the screenplay into a feature with fellow NYFA classmate Thomas Bond, based on the cartel violence of real-life Falcon Lake, a reservoir by the US-Mexico border. The script was part of Film Independent’s Fast Track program, and was awarded the Tribeca Film Institute’s TAA Grant.  She eventually filmed it with a stellar cast, led by Camila Mendes from The CW’s Riverdale and Adriana Barraza, who was Oscar-nominated for her role in Babel.

Sara Seligman Coyote LakeThe filmmaker originally hails from Mexico and while Coyote Lake is her feature directorial debut, she has been very productive since graduating NYFA. After working as a production assistant, Seligman became a producer and joined the PGA, working on both high-profile projects as well as her own personal ones, including Plan V, a screenplay she sold in 2015 that was released in Mexico last year. She produced, wrote, and directed the short film Diego, which screened at over twenty film festivals around the world and won multiple awards, including the Gold Lion at the Barcelona Film Festival.

Coyote Lake will have its US premiere on August 2, accompanied by a Q&A panel. The film will then have a limited theatrical release in select locations across the country. During its release, you can find Coyote Lake at the following theaters:

Los Feliz 3 – Los Angeles
IFC Center & AMC Empire – New York City
Cosford Cinema – Miami, FL
North Oaks – Houston, TX
Galaxy – Austin, TX
Gateway – Columbus, OH

Coyote Lake will later screen as part of HBO’s New York International Latino Film Festival Official Selection in New York City.
