College Credits

New York Film Academy College Credits

If you attend a program or workshop at the New York Film Academy please refer to the table below for the number of credits awarded and to the conditions for the award of credit. Please note, all programs are not offered at all campuses. Depending on the campus, some programs are measured in clock-hours rather than credit.

Conditions For The Awarding Of Credits

In order to earn credit, NYFA students must meet the Academy’s Academic & Attendance Policies. For complete details regarding these policies, please consult the Course Catalog. The New York Film Academy awards credits according to the following policy:

Credits are defined as semester units, which consist of 3 hours of work each week for a period of 15-16 weeks. In lecture courses requiring outside preparation, 1 credit represents 1 hour of instruction and at least 2 hours of work outside of class per week. In studio/laboratory courses, 1 credit represents 1.5 to 2 hours of instruction and at least 1-1.5 hours of studio/laboratory preparation, per week.

In undergraduate and certificate programs, a minimum of 12 credits per semester is required for students to maintain full-time status. In graduate programs, a minimum of 9 credits per semester is required for students to maintain full-time status.

Credits for each program can be found in the Course Catalog.

Credit Transfer Policy

Transfer students must meet the same overall academic standards and requirements as students who enter the BA or BFA as freshmen. NYFA can accept up to 30 units of Liberal Arts & Science from other schools. The studio arts curriculum at NYFA is highly specialized and integrated with very few electives and it is the general policy of New York Film Academy not to accept transfer units in studio arts from other institutions.

Grades from transfer courses are not used to calculate the NYFA grade-point average; only the course units transfer. While NYFA makes every effort to grant transfer students credit for applicable previous study, it may place further restrictions on the acceptance of transfer units in order to maintain the integrity of the BFA degree program. For this reason, courses, practica or internships, taken at other institutions may not transfer. Acceptance of units in transfer does not guarantee that those units will be applicable to the BFA degree.

Students desiring credit for previous academic work or training must submit a written request for such credit to the Office of Admission or the Office of the Registrar, along with transcripts and/or official score reports 30 days prior to the start of the program or semester. No requests for transfer credits can be evaluated until students have submitted evidence of completed coursework. Students who fail to submit a transfer credit request and provide all required documents by the deadline will not have their credits transferred until the following semester and must attend all mandatory courses in their program.

To be accepted for transfer, courses must have been taken at an accredited institution, taken for a letter grade of a C or higher (where the C grade has the numerical equivalent of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 point scale); be a college-level course and must be the substantial equivalent of a course offered at the New York Film Academy. If credit is awarded, the length and/or requirements of the program may be adjusted. Only official transcripts, official score reports and official evaluations of foreign units shall be used for this review.

The New York Film Academy makes no representation whatsoever that credits awarded by the New York Film Academy will be accepted or applied toward the completion of any degree or certificate by any other postsecondary institution. The acceptance of transfer credits is always governed by the receiving school.

Transfer of International Credit

Credit from institutions outside the country must be equated to those at accredited US colleges and universities. It is the responsibility of the student to furnish NYFA with an original certified copy of an evaluation of his/her international units performed by World Educational Services or an equivalent service approved by the Office of the Registrar.

Transcripts and college credits are processed and issued solely by the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles, California.
