The animation school at the New York Film Academy offers two intensive, hands-on 3D animation workshops open to students with little or no prior animation experience. Offered at either our New York City campus or Harvard University for the three-week workshop, each workshop is an intensive and immersive educational experience designed to familiarize students with the principles of animation and 3D animation software. Students get the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art equipment under the guidance of our distinguished faculty.
In the Film Academy’s 3D Computer Animation Three-Week Workshops, classes are held every day, Monday through Friday. Students learn the major concepts of animation. The bulk of students’ time outside of class is spent in supervised labs. Lab time is used to complete and to expand upon assignments, as well as to create extra work for final animated films. The students’ final animation is output digitally and projected at a celebratory screening.
This course teaches students the principles of animation (movement, timing, weight, character development, etc.) using Maya—the industry standard high-end 3D computer program. Students progress through basic modeling, motion and rendering exercises en route to the completion of a short 3D computer animated film (with sound) of their own design by the end of the course.
Offered exclusively at Harvard University, the Three-Week 3D Animation Workshop offers students the chance to learn the essentials of 3D animation in the gorgeous surroundings of Harvard University.
No prior experience is required to enroll in the Three-Week 3D Animation Workshop.
This workshop is designed for individuals who want to learn the basics of a high-end 3D computer program but do not have the time required to devote to full-time study as a year-round student. Students in the Four-Week 3D Computer Animation workshop will write, animate, direct and edit their own computer animated short films. Our animation programs do not require drawing ability. Animation students at the Academy are able to create 3D characters and environments along the lines of Shrek.
The workshop is designed for students with little or no experience in animation. Regardless of previous experience, each student designs, animates, and completes her or his own personal 3D computer animated short film. Topics covered in the workshop include screenwriting and storyboarding, modeling, UV mapping, materials, lighting, rigging, animation, cameras, rendering, and editing and compositing.
In the four-week workshop, students learn the fundamentals of 3D animation, which include movement, weight, timing, character development, and much more through hands-on experience with the industry-standard Maya software. Over the course of the four weeks, students quickly develop from learning how to perform basic modeling to creating their own original 3D computer animated film.
