Documentary Filmmaking Program

Learn How to Create Non-fiction Films at NYFA

At NYFA’s Documentary Filmmaking School, there are a variety of programs that make an education in the film arts accessible to the broadest spectrum of students. Aspiring non-fiction filmmakers who have earned their high school diploma may apply for our 1-Year program in Documentary Filmmaking, where they work on a number of their own original short films.

As a majority of their time is spent creating their own content, students quickly become comfortable writing, shooting, directing, producing, and editing their own short films.

Studying under the guidance of our faculty of working filmmakers and directors, students also acquire essential skills in presentation, collaboration, pitching, and interviewing. Upon graduation, students will earn a college credit-bearing Certificate. Students also have the flexibility to continue their education in a degree or enter the creative field of their choice.

Documentary Filmmaking Program

In NYFA’s 1-Year Documentary Filmmaking, students study full-time at NYFA New York or Los Angeles. During the program, students explore a variety of non-fiction storytelling mediums, including short films, web video, and vlogs, and create a series of their own original content.

Many students use the experience in our program to gain experience and training in the craft, and begin to develop a body of work.
