NYFA NY Waiver Application Portal

NYFA NY Waiver Application Portal

THE WAIVER APPLICATION PORTAL WILL BE OPEN TO FALL 2024 STUDENTS AND CURRENTLY ENROLLED CONTINUING STUDENTS ATTENDING LONG TERM PROGRAMS, JULY 15, 2024 THROUGH OCTOBER 7, 2024.  WAIVER APPLICATIONS CANNOT BE ACCEPTED OR PROCESSED OUTSIDE OF THIS TIME PERIOD WHEN THE WAIVER PORTAL IS OPEN.

IF YOU HAVE COMPARABLE HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE AND IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE ENROLLED IN THE NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN (NYFASHIP), YOU MUST SUBMIT AN ONLINE WAIVER APPLICATION BETWEEN JULY 15, 2024, AND OCT 7, 2024.  IF YOU HAVE COMPARABLE HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE, AND YOU DO NOT SUBMIT A WAIVER APPLICATION THROUGH THE WAIVER APPLICATION PORTAL DURING THE TIME PERIOD NOTED ABOVE, YOU WILL BE ENROLLED IN NYFASHIP FOR THE DURATION OF THE 2024/2025 ACADEMIC YEAR AND RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT OF FEES FOR HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE, 8/18/2024-8/30/2025 (NEW STUDENTS) OR 8/31/2024-8/30/2025 (CONTINUING STUDENTS).

ALL STUDENTS WHO DO NOT SUBMIT A WAIVER APPLICATION BETWEEN JULY 15, 2024 AND OCT 7, 2024 AND ALL STUDENTS WHOSE SUBMITTED WAIVER APPLICATIONS ARE DENIED WILL BE ENROLLED IN NYFASHIP AND RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT OF FEES FOR HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR THE DURATION OF THE 2024/2025 ACADEMIC YEAR.

Upon completion of the waiver application process, students will receive emails from Aetna confirming that their applications and information have been received for review. Aetna will provide follow-up emails notifying students if their waiver applications have been approved or declined. If declined, insurance charges will remain on students’ accounts. If approved, charges for NYFASHIP coverage will be removed (or refunded) from students’ accounts. Students are encouraged to carefully and thoroughly read all email communications received from Aetna.

Students who elect to enroll in NYFASHIP and students whose waiver applications have been denied will be billed for term enrollment costs, per the rate chart noted above, prior to Fall, Spring and Summer terms and for as long as they remain enrolled in their academic programs for the 2024/2025 academic year. For these students, once the waiver portal is closed and charges for insurance coverage are applied, the charges cannot be reversed.

As a FALL 2024 student and for students who started their long-term programs in 2022, 2023, and 2024 (Spring and Summer), you will again need to submit a waiver application each and every subsequent FALL for as long as you remain enrolled in your long-term program, as waiver permissions expire at the end of each academic year.  Your waiver application must be submitted and approved each FALL to dis-enroll from NYFASHIP for any and all subsequent academic years.

Waiver Application Process

Students who do not wish to participate in the NYFA Student Health Insurance Plan can apply to waive enrollment by submitting proof of comparable health insurance coverage and participating in the online waiver application process. Students may apply to waive out of NYFASHIP at the time of their first semester registration and at the time of every subsequent Fall semester registration.

Waiver applications must be submitted before a designated deadline. Deadline dates for online waiver application submissions will be posted and updated on the NYFASHIP website.

For Students Beginning Long-Term Programs in August (Fall Term):
Students beginning long-term programs in the Fall Term who do not want to enroll in NYFASHIP are required to submit an online waiver application at the time of their first semester (Fall/August) registration and at the time of each Fall (August) semester registration for the duration of their NYFA program, per deadline dates published on the NYFASHIP website.

For Students Beginning Long-Term Programs in January (Spring Term):
Students beginning long-term programs in the Spring Term who do not want to enroll in NYFASHIP are required to submit an online waiver application at the time of their first semester (Spring/January) registration, at the time of the subsequent Fall (Sept) semester registration, and every Fall (August) semester registration, thereafter, depending on the duration of their program, and per deadline dates published on the NYFASHIP website.

For Students Beginning Long-Term Programs in May (Summer Term):
Students beginning long-term programs in the Summer Term who do not want to enroll in NYFASHIP are required to submit an online waiver application at the time of their first semester (Summer/May) registration, at the time to their second (Fall/August) semester registration, and every Fall (August) semester registration, thereafter, depending on the duration of their program.

Students who do not participate in the waiver process, students who submit waiver applications outside of the published time frame for their particular programs, and students who whose waiver applications are denied will be enrolled in NYFASHIP until Fall (August) of the subsequent year.

Waiver Application Decisions

Waivers are monitored, verified, and approved by Aetna. Aetna will send timely email messages to students, confirming or denying approval of waivers.

Insurance plans that DO NOT typically meet requirements for waivers include out-of-state Medicaid plans, travel insurance plans, catastrophic plans, and out-of-state HMO plans.

Students whose waiver applications are denied will remain enrolled in NYFASHIP coverage until the subsequent Fall semester registration period, at which time waiver applications to dis-enroll in NYFASHIP for the upcoming year may be re-submitted.

Those students able to provide proof of comparable coverage through participation in the waiver application process will be dis-enrolled from the NYFA Student Health Insurance Plan. All charges for insurance premium costs and administrative fees billed to students’ accounts will be removed or fully refunded.

How are waiver applications monitored?

Waiver applications are evaluated and verified by Aetna. Aetna will send confirmation messages to students once a waiver application is submitted regarding its status, stating if the waiver application was accepted, denied, pending review, or that Aetna needs additional information to verify.

What if I successfully waive out of enrollment in NYFASHIP but then, I unexpectedly lose my health insurance coverage before the subsequent fall semester, when I would again automatically be in NYFA’s student insurance plan?

Aetna may consider this situation a qualifying life event or a life status change, depending on the reason your active insurance was terminated. An example of a qualifying life event is a parent or spouse/domestic partner losing their insurance due to change of employment status. Students approved for late enrollment to NYFASHIP will be allowed to purchase NYFASHIP within 30 days of the qualifying event.
