NYFA Screens ‘The Monuments Men’ with Writer / Producer Grant Heslov

Tova Laiter with Grant Heslov at a full house

Grant Heslov, Academy Award winning Writer/ Producer (Argo) and George Clooney’s partner at Smokehouse, was the guest tonight at the New York Film Academy for a sneak preview of the upcoming SONY Pictures release The Monuments Men! Over 220 eager students participated in the Q&A, which was moderated by Producer Tova Laiter.

One of the first questions on Tova’s mind was how the film came about. Grant, a very funny and charming speaker, told the students that, “I was traveling, forgot my book at the hotel, so I went to the airport bookstore. I really loved it. It was a story I’d never heard before and George (Clooney) and I decided to make it. You never know what you’re going to find in an airport!”

When asked by Tova how he and Clooney met Grant described his college days. “It was the summer of my freshman year, when I was about 19. I took an acting class and George was in it. We’ve been friends ever since.”

grant heslovGrant earned a BFA in Theater and Acting at USC and was an actor for 20 years. He feels that his education in acting has been a great base for much of the work he does in terms of writing and character, being on sets, and observing how it’s all done.

A student asked Grant about the writing process and specifically about handling a writing block in the middle of a project. Grant admitted that writing is challenging. “The middle is always hard. I’m lucky that I write with a partner. You have to turn off your editor mind and just write whatever.”

Steven, a student, asked Grant what drives him, especially now that he is an accomplished actor, writer and producer. “The desire to tell good stories is the drive.”

Grant plays a doctor in The Monuments Men, although this was not planned. He told the story of a British actor whose wife went into labor and pulled out of the project at the last minute. George Clooney suggested Grant jump in and play the doctor. “I still have my SAG card,” he joked.

Student, Marielle asked Grant about the responsibility involved in telling real stories, which he has done plenty of in recent film projects (Good Night and Good Luck, Argo, and now The Monuments Men). Grant explained, “We aren’t making docs or docu-dramas, but you try to stay true. In Good Night and Good Luck, for example, we had access to the newscasters as they were still around. In Argo, we stuck pretty close to the story except for the end. In this film, there were hundreds of Monuments Men. Then you are trying to piece it all together, and we changed the names so we can get into the flaws of the characters more.”

Asked what were his biggest assets and obstacles in becoming a filmmaker, he joked that in both cases it was, “being an actor.”

A student asked Grant what was his relationship with art and history as a storyteller. “I love art and I love history. I am interested in World War II –as it was a defining moment in history. I’m Jewish, and there is a connection.”

Clearly Grant and George have a good system in place working together. He shared with the audience that all of their films have been produced and completed under budget. The Monuments Men finished $5 million under budget and they wrote it in 3-4 months.

Finally, Grant told another comedic story about having a hard time naming their production company, Smokehouse Productions. He said that his and George’s office was directly across the street from the restaurant in Burbank, and that they used to go there to drink at the bar (It is also across the street from one of the NYFA buildings in Burbank). One day, George called him and suggested they name their production company after the restaurant.

Musical Theatre Kicks off 2014 with a Bang

It is a crisp chilly day in New York and things are definitely heating up within the Musical Theatre Program. We completed a very well attended and expertly presented first semester showcase for our current September group. It was presented a block away from Lincoln Center at the beautiful Marjorie S. Deane theatre.

The second year students, currently in their 4th and last semester, wrapped a very intense and successful seven-day shoot of their original movie musical. Script and lyrics by yours truly and the music provided by the hugely talented Bobby Cronin, we have what looks to be both a touching and hilarious movie on our hands. We have entered the editing process and will see a rough-cut screening during their final graduation. They will, of course, all receive the final copy when the fine edit is completed.

Other classes are working diligently as well, pursuing their dance, acting, and singing training in an environment of other artists who are focused on musical theatre and also want to learn about film and television acting.

While many of our alumni are gaining traction out in the greater marketplaces of both the United States and abroad, we are excited and proud to announce that recent graduate, Jeff Sullivan, won a 2013 BroadwayWorld New Jersey Award for “Best Actor in a Professional Musical” for his portrayal of Tony Brockhurst in a production of The Boy Friend at Surflight Theatre. This will no doubt be a big boost for his aspirations and a nice reflection of the efforts and investment made through his training in the New York Film Academy’s Musical Theatre Program.

NYFA Welcomes First Qatari Woman to Study BFA in Photography

NYFA Aisha b&w
Aisha Al-Musallam

As a whole-hearted supporter of the feminist movement both home and abroad, the New York Film Academy is proud of photography student, Aisha Al-Musallam, who is the first woman from Qatar to study for a bachelor’s degree in photography. Aisha’s passion for photography began by simply photographing her friends and family. Her love of the craft drove her to write a letter to renowned photographer, Maher Attar, for private lessons.

With 30 years of experience at international photo agencies, Attar is currently the director of the image bank at the office of Her Highness Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser, First Lady of Qatar. As fate would have it, Attar met with Aisha and eventually took her under his wing. Aisha admires his work to the utmost degree and now humbly considers him as a mentor.

From there, Aisha was hired to be on Her Highness’ personal staff of photographers. As a member of Her Highness’ personal staff, Aisha is privy to work at a number of exclusive events. As if the job wasn’t grand enough, Aisha also gets to travel the world, from Istanbul to America, to cover events for Her Highness.

Due to Her Highness’ progressive stance on women’s rights, Aisha was supported and encouraged to pursue her bachelor’s degree in photography. She initially dipped her foot in the water by studying at New York Film Academy’s 4-Week Photography Program. From there, she decided NYFA was the perfect choice to complete her BFA in Photography. “It was my dream to get my bachelor’s,” said Aisha. “So far, it’s been amazing. Brian Dilg and David Mager are my top teachers!”

After completing her BFA, Aisha plans on returning to Qatar to resume her work with Her Highness. However, after a year or so, she would like to continue her education by completing her Master’s in Photography.

NYFA Grad’s ‘Cooties’ Acquired by Lionsgate at Sundance

Cooties Doug Brown NYFA

With the Sundance Film Festival in full gear, it’s with tremendous pride we find a producing graduate from one of our NYFA programs, Douglas Brown, showcasing his new film Cooties. Douglas served as co-producer of the horror/comedy film, which stars Elijah Wood and Rainn Wilson. Similar to Zombieland, the film provides laugh-out-loud comedy while, at the same time, not shying away from the gore. The premiere was a monumental success, considering the fact that Lionsgate acquired the film for global distribution! So, for those of you who weren’t fortunate enough to attend Sundance this year, expect to see more traditional viewing options for Cooties sometime this year.

Douglas attended the New York Film Academy via the VA Bill, which he earned for his military service. Many NYFA programs have been approved for the Post-9/11 GI Bill and we proudly participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program.
