NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY (NYFA) WELCOMES ‘THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE’ AND ‘THE TOMORROW WAR’ WRITER/DIRECTOR CHRIS MCKAY TO THE Q&A-LIST SERIES

New York Film Academy (NYFA) had the honor of hosting a live video Q&A with Chris McKay, writer, and director of box-office hits including The LEGO BATMAN Movie (2017) and THE TOMORROW WAR (2021). Tova Laiter, Director of the NYFA Q&A-List Series, moderated the event alongside NYFA’s Craig Caton-Largent, Chair of 3D Animation & VFX, who worked on high-profile films including Jurassic Park (1993), Apollo 13 (1995).

Chris McKay is an award-winning filmmaker with a specialty in animation. For his work on The Lego Batman Movie, the second feature in the LEGO film franchise, McKay was nominated for an Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement for Directing in an Animated Feature Production. The film itself was nominated for a Producers Guild of America Award, a Critics Choice Award, an American Cinema Editors Eddie Award, and an Art Directors Guild Award, among others.

McKay has taken on almost every role of the filmmaking process, including producer. He produced The Lego Ninjago Movie (2017), starring Justin Theroux, Dave Franco, and Jackie Chan. When asked for a look back into how he started in film, McKay told Laiter that during his early start in film, he took on as much work as possible in order to maximize his opportunities of learning from others starting as editor.

Screen still from The LEGO Movie (2017)

According to McKay, “As editor, you’re kind of like a psychologist. You play a bunch of different roles. I think Coppola famously said, ‘it’s the third part of the screenwriting process.’ You write a script, and then you re-write it on set, and the final rewrite is post-production.”

Laiter asked McKay how the production of The LEGO Movie franchise started, and McKay discussed his attachment to the project. Following his work on 21 Jump street (2012) and after his success with the TV show, Robot Chicken, McKay was tapped by two directors with whom he worked in television, who needed McKay’s expertise in problem-solving to help launch The LEGO Movie project. Unfortunately, in the beginning, the project lost its greenlight and was scrapped by Warner Brothers. McKay’s job was to recommit the studio to the project. As an animator, McKay understood that the mini-figure animation design stood the test of time therefore his role was to convince the studio that The LEGO Movie characters would have the capacity to emit real emotions, as would live actors. McKay and his team created a “black box audition” animation with The LEGO Movie’s main character, Emmett “auditioning” for his role.

Guest Moderator Craig Caton-Largent asked McKay about his biggest technical challenges as an animator. McKay notes that the biggest challenge for The LEGO Movie was getting the animation style of LEGO bricks to emulate stop-motion animation style, including making the bricks have photo-realistic movement.

McKay notes that aside from the technical aspects of the animation itself, his first challenge was to convince fellow animators that the LEGO stop-motion style would work as a film.

McKay observed, “as an editor, you’re sort of at the end of the process, and you can see all the accumulation of people’s wins and losses. You can really learn a lot and there’s a lot of this psychology of making movies that end up in the editing suite. You hear all the stories–you hear all the assumptions that people made going into something, and then you can help them.”

When asked for his advice on what skills are necessary to be a great filmmaker, McKay encouraged students to get to know people and really enjoy working with people. For networking, McKay recommended that students and young filmmakers try to recruit an agent or manager as soon as they can. Additionally, he suggested taking advantage of informational interviews, which include taking people out to lunch or coffee, to simply “pick their brain.” While not an opportunity to pitch a project, the informational interview is a chance to learn from someone with industry experience who is willing to spend time to offer advice.

McKay eased students’ self-doubts with these words of advice, “don’t ever doubt your skills, because it’s a learning process. Everything is a growth process. You may not have some skill in some area right now–today–but that doesn’t mean you can’t figure out a way to achieve it. You will get the experience.”

New York Film Academy would like to thank Chris McKay for sharing his time and perspective as a Filmmaker and Director with NYFA students and alumni.

NYFA DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING ALUM PEDRO PEIRA’S SCREENS ‘LA QUEENCIAÑERA’ AT OUTFEST FILM FESTIVAL

At the 2021 Outfest Los Angeles Film Festival, NYFA alum Pedro Peira screened his documentary, LA Queenciañera (2021) to a worldwide audience. The 2021 edition of Outfest ran from August 13th until August 22nd. The festival showcased over 170 feature-length films and shorts that celebrate the queer experience. Focused on the heritage of the LGBTQIA+ experience, participants are provided film screenings, panel events, and awards ceremonies to highlight and promote the community’s up-and-coming filmmakers.

The feature film LA Queenciañera (2021) screened at this year’s Outfest Los Angeles Film Festival

Pedro Peira is a Fulbright scholarship student and a graduate of NYFA’s MFA Documentary Filmmaking program. Originally from Spain, the director’s interest in documentary filmmaking originated as a preteen. In a previous Q&A with NYFA, Peira shared that he chose to become a documentary filmmaker because he finds documentaries as having a way of “informing, entertaining and hopefully, promoting social change”.

Peria’s 84-minute feature film, LA Queenciañera is a documentary that follows Bamby Salcedo, a transgender activist who reflects on her own personal journey as she approaches her 50th birthday. From Guadalajara, Mexico, Salcedo is a recovered addict from LA’s Skid Row whose first job with the LGBTQIA+ community started right after her recovery. She is now recognized internationally, as a Latina Transgender activist.

Watch the film’s trailer below:

The director took on many roles and occupations before directing LA Queenciañera. Peira worked in sales, production, and later as director, and writer. He now heads his own production company, Festimania Pictures, founded 7 years ago. Back then, Festimania Pictures only handled “some distribution and consulting” as part of their practice. Now, the company is “mainly focused on documentary production,” according to Peira. The company has gone on to produce several successful feature films, including Soul and Freeway. The film Soul premiered globally at the Berlin Film Festival in 2017, and Freeway premiered internationally at the San Sebastian Film Festival in 2020.

Initially meant to be a short film, it soon became a bigger project. In an interview with Variety, Peira discusses the background of the production and how the team came together, “We shot all around L.A. for a week and became acquainted with Bamby. What was meant to be a short film soon became a feature film project.”

With sights on the future, Peira told NYFA he and his production company were developing a documentary series which “explores the influence of Islam on the gastronomies of Indonesia, United Arab Emirates, Morocco, and Spain.”

The New York Film Academy once again congratulates Pedro Peira for his outstanding work in the film industry, as well as his continued success.

NYFA FILMMAKING ALUMNI SHOOT DIGITAL ISSUE OF HARPER’S BAZAAR ROMANIA

Prominent fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar featured two New York Film Academy (NYFA) alumni following their work on a photoshoot and film. Arnav Kasbekar, a graduate of NYFA’s Filmmaking BFA program, collaborated with Kormiyaki Lamarr, a fellow NYFA alum. Lamarr earned his BFA in Photography. The duo partnered with Karyna Dobra, another Photography BFA alum.

Overseeing the photoshoot for the cover of the magazine, Kasbekar and Lamarr created a short, 1- minute fashion film for Harper’s. You can watch the full short film below:

Harper’s Bazaar Romania (Fashion Film) from Kormiyaki Lamarr on Vimeo.

Arnav Kasbekar spoke with NYFA to discuss creating the short film and his experiences studying at the school.

New York Film Academy (NYFA): What made you want to study at NYFA?

Arnav Kasbekar (AK): Growing up I always had a passion for film. I loved everything about going to a cinema, it was stimulating. It was not until I had the privilege to be in a feature film, Neerja (2016), that I was exposed to the world of filmmaking. My mind was blown–ever since then it was a dream of mine to pursue a career in the film industry.

On one set, I met a very talented Individual named, Mitesh Mirchandani, who was the Director of Photography for Neerja, but more importantly, a fellow NYFA alum. His praises for NYFA were numerous. I took his advice and decided to make my way to Los Angeles.

NYFA: What do you love most about filmmaking?

AK: I love to tell stories. Movies awaken our vision and touch our hearts. They change the way we see things–they open doors in our minds. Movies tell human stories–unique and unknown stories. They give the audience the emotions they sometimes lack in some periods of their lives. Something, I like to incorporate in my stories from back home (India), as I would want the world to learn and enjoy our culture.

NYFA: Do you have any advice for incoming students?

AK: Honestly, I don’t think I’m in a position to give any advice to incoming students, since I’m a recent grad! Jokes aside, I feel at first film school seems very scary, but what I learned is if you just keep your head down and put in 120%, that’s exactly what you will receive from it. In film school, we are lucky to network with brilliant teachers who have had plenty of experience in the industry. Plus, we get to make some of the best friends in class who will also be your crew for life!

NYFA: Can you tell us more about your video for Harper’s Bazaar? How does one pitch themselves to a big media company?

AK: This was actually my first big media company. It was actually all thanks to NYFA Photography alum, Karyna Dobra. She gave my partner, Kormiyaki Lamarr (also an NYFA alum) and me, the opportunity to assist her on a Harper’s Bazaar cover that she shot. On set, we networked with producers who liked our work and trusted us with the shooting of a fashion film.

NYFA: What other projects have you worked on?

AK: Over my three years at NYFA, I’ve had some unforgettable experiences on sets. From shooting a war film in cold Minnesota to shooting projects on the Universal backlot. It’s been a blast.

Some of the other projects I’ve worked on are two features back in India, Tumhari Sulu and Neerja. Recently, we shot another fashion film for InStyle magazine. I’m currently working on a project with Lamarr and Sofie Perez. The project is a photo and video project that will be exhibited in the Soumaya Museum in Mexico City.

The New York Film Academy congratulates Arnav Kasbekar, as well as Karyna Dobrykava, Kormiyaki Lamarr, and Sofie Perez, for their hard work and their successes in film and photography. We wish them many successes in the future.

Please note: NYFA does not represent that these are typical or guaranteed career outcomes. The success of our graduates in any chosen professional pathway depends on multiple factors, and the achievements of NYFA alumni are the result of their hard work, perseverance, talent and circumstances.

Until COVID restrictions on the Universal Studios backlot subside, not all cohorts or students will be able to attend production workshops on the backlot. The backlot is generally not used for production workshops for screenwriting, animation and game design departments.

Gianluigi Carella To Become A Director for Stept Studios

NYFA Filmmaking alum Gianluigi Carella joined the directorial roster at Stept Studios, a creative and production studio known for its advertising. Carella is a graduate of NYFA’s 1-Year Filmmaking conservatory program in New York City. The Italian filmmaker’s body of work includes a myriad of filmmaking jobs. He has worked on popular music videos as well as commercial videos for international brands, including Tommy Hilfiger, Samsung, T-Mobile, Prada, Gucci, Dior, Tom Ford, Tiffany & Co., and Spotify.

Filmmaker Gianluigi Carella
Filmmaker Gianluigi Carella

According to the filmmaker, “Having signed with an agency like Stept has definitely given me access to certain bids and opportunities. I also signed with Nicholas Berglund in Europe for commercial rep and I am represented by Forager.tv as an editor.”

Carella was first recognized within the industry for his editing on the VMA-nominated ‘Rule The World’ music video for Ariana Grande, featuring 2Chainz.

The filmmaker has a forthcoming project, also produced by Stept Studios, for Oakley and is directing a feature documentary for Amazon on Bella Thorne. The documentary features Benji Mascolo and Bella Thorne. The Leone Film Group-produced film is currently in pre-production and will be available on Amazon Prime Video.

Stept Studios prides itself on the creative content its directors produce. The studio provides services in strategy, production, and post-production. Per their website, their team of directors “represent the next generation of storytellers.”

An article from Shoot details Carella’s extensive and equally impressive career thus far. The NYFA alum started as an editor for Forager after he graduated from NYFA. He began making a name for himself after working on Ariana Grande’s ‘Rule The World’, which would earn Carella a great deal more work.

Carella made his directorial debut with the film, The Blind Man’s Ball. Since then, he’s directed many music videos for international artists (including Princess Nokia, Anna, Rich the Kid, Irama, and Sofia Reyes). In the commercial world, the NYFA alum also worked on a series of films for Lux Hotels, Audi, Cartier, and Donna Karan. Additionally, Carella directed and edited an ad for the Riot Games and Mercedes-Benz partnership too.

Carella’s advice for students is to get ready for when the opportunities come. The filmmaker says, “If I hadn’t spent so many endless nights smashing my head on the keyboard trying to understand how certain things are done, prepping my website, working on specs and personal projects to show my skills, I wouldn’t have been able to get hired and get noticed. When they come to you, you need to have your stuff together, something to show. Use every single school project as something you could potentially show to a client, go simple and clean, AND LEARN EDITING.”

The New York Film Academy congratulates Gianluigi Carella for his impeccable work in the film industry and looks forwards to his upcoming projects.
