12TH ANNUAL BRONZELENS FILM FESTIVAL SCREENS NYFA ALUMNI FILMS ‘AFTERMATH’ AND ‘LOVING BYRON’

Three New York Film Academy (NYFA) alumni, Tarik Holmes & Jonathan Samukange, and Deante’ Gray screened their latest films as part of this year’s 12th Annual BronzeLens Film Festival official selection. Their short films, Aftermath and Loving Byron, were screened to audiences online in August 2021. The BronzeLens Film Festival is an Oscar-qualifying festival that showcases films by, for, and about people of color.

Tarik Holmes, writer, producer, and lead actor in Aftermath, is an honors graduate of NYFA’s MFA Acting for Film. NYFA Acting Department Associate Chair Anne Moore describes Holmes as “a sensitive, driven, and talented artist whose vision is unique as an actor and storyteller. His powerful voice is valuable and needs to be heard.”

Aftermath follows the story of a young man who abducts his older brother as revenge for their troubled past. The NYFA alum found inspiration for the story from his own relationship with his brother. “When I left home for film school in California, it was my first time being that far away from my family,” Holmes describes, “Although we would call each other all the time, I felt like I left my younger brother behind and I was missing certain milestones in his life. So I created this crazy story as a love letter to him.”

Holmes was introduced to NYFA BFA Filmmaking student, Jonathan Samukange, through a mutual professor. Holmes recounted that he was on the way to their first meeting when Samukange called and said “he was surprised at how great the script was and he had to direct it! I was so surprised and humbled.” Samukange concurred. “Tarik is hardworking, dedicated, and came highly recommended. I completely connected with him and the screenplay, which I felt was well written. And I could relate to the subject.”

Holmes describes Samukange as an actor’s director. “He really made me feel comfortable and was specific about investing in each character. Before each take, he spoke with us to see how we were feeling and guided us into the scene,” Holmes says. “I remember while we were shooting one scene, I kept messing up a line, so he told me to ad-lib in character, and it felt so freeing to let out my frustrations. That moment ended up being in the final cut.”

The second film screened at this year’s festival was Loving Byron, which follows the story of a 17-year-old boy who runs away from his problematic home with his girlfriend to live in the middle of nowhere. Writer and Director of the film, Deante’ Gray is an MA graduate from NYFA’s Film and Media Production program after a torn ACL sidelined his career as a professional football player.

Gray discusses the inspiration for the film which, “was my upbringing growing up in Houston. How a kid can be so in love, so hopeful in life, and have it all stripped away at a moment’s notice.”

Gray’s favorite part of directing the film was exploring the characters with his actors. “My lead is actually my best friend who I grew up with in Houston,” the director explained. “So our connection and us knowing everything about one another only amplified the focus and care that was needed to make this film what it is.”

After graduating from NYFA’s Los Angeles campus, all three creatives returned to their homes to build their careers. Holmes resides in Jamaica producing, writing, and acting in original work. Samukange returned to Zimbabwe to build a film production studio where he plans to produce his first feature film. Gray used his time in Houston to write, shoot, and direct the web series Sunday Dinner, available now on YouTube.

“I’m so proud of these filmmakers and the hard work they’ve put into film festivals,” says Crickett Rumley, director of NYFA’s Film Festival Department. “Deante’ has already screened at New Filmmakers LA and won an award at WorldFest Houston. Tarik and Jonathan have been at the African Film Festival in Dallas and the Charlotte Black Film Festival. I feel confident they will have a great experience with BronzeLens and enjoy the festival’s impressive offerings.”

The New York Film Academy congratulates Holmes, Samukange, and Gray on their films’ selection by the prestigious BronzeLens Film Festival.

Please note: NYFA does not represent that these are typical or guaranteed career outcomes. The success of our graduates in any chosen professional pathway depends on multiple factors, and the achievements of NYFA alumni are the result of their hard work, perseverance, talent and circumstances.

NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY (NYFA) SCREENWRITING ALUM MOHAMED DIAB SCREENS FILM AT VENICE FILM FESTIVAL

New York Film Academy (NYFA) Screenwriting alum Mohamed Diab screens his latest film, Amira, at this year’s 78th Venice Film Festival. Writer Mohamed Diab attended NYFA’s 1-year screenwriting program in 2005. The Egyptian filmmaker has film credits as a Writer, Director, and Actor for a variety of films, including Tayea, TV Show Renegades, Induced Labor, and Cairo 678. His international recognition has won him awards and acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival and Dubai International Film Festival.

Still from Mohamed Diab’s, Amira (2021)

His latest work, Amira, follows the story of a 17-year-old Palestinian girl who was conceived with the smuggled sperm of her imprisoned father, Nawar. Although their father-daughter relationship was restricted to prison visits, he remains her hero. His absence in her life is overcompensated with love and affection from those surrounding her. When it is revealed that Nawar is infertile, Amira’s world turns upside down.

Taken from true-life events, Amira is based on the realities of Palestinian children who are conceived through in-vitro fertilization. Often, these children are conceived using smuggled sperm from Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails.

Starring Tara Abboud as Amira, the Jordanian actress gave a shout out to the film on Instagram: ”Feeling blessed ???? so excited for this beautiful film to Premiere???? Amira lands it’s World Premiere at the 78th @labiennale#venicefilmfestival, where it will be competing within the Orizzonti competition ???? @amiraofficialfilm/.” This will be the young actress’s feature film debut.

Truly a representation of the region, the film is produced by Egyptian filmmakers Mohamed Hefzy, Moez Masoud, and Mona Abdelwahab. Palestinian filmmakers Hany Abu Assad, Amira Diab, and Egyptian producer Sarah Goher, oversaw the production.

The film features a star-studded cast from Jordan and Palestine, including Saba Mubarak, Ali Suliman, Kais Nashif, and Waleed Zuaiter. While shot in Jordan, the film takes place in Palestine. Venice Film Festival pass holders will have the opportunity to see the film during its screening times between September 3rd and September 5th, 2021.

One of a total of 21 feature films competing this year, Amira represents Middle Eastern filmmaking in an ocean of Italian, Belgian, Greek, German, and Swedish films.

New York Film Academy congratulates alum Mohamed Diab on his work and screening at the Venice Film Festival.

In 2020, NIFF pivoted along with every other organization to keep its attendants and participants safe by re-structuring its film showings in response to COVID-19. They included outdoor film screenings and COVID-19 safety restrictions. Back with an in-person venue, the festival is ready to continue its work in maintaining a safe environment in adherence to CDC guidelines.

In keeping with its mission, NIFF allocated 50% of its 2020 Official Selection ticket sales to the Brown Art Ink and the Black Independent Filmmaker app. In 2019, the festival touted a staggering 250% more female directors showcased than in the top 250 grossing films in the US, which was a mere 13% in the same year.

New York Film Academy congratulates NYFA alumni Johan Matton and Linnea Larsdotter on the continued success of the Nordic International Film Festival as well as this year’s Aurora Borealis winner, Lisa Meyer who directed Birds of Passage.

6 NYFA Alumni to Support this Black-Owned Business Month

August is National Black Business Month, where we as a nation of consumers recognize and support black-owned businesses across the United States. According to the 2019 Annual Business Survey (covering the reference year 2018), 124, 551 businesses are owned by Black Americans, representing just over 2% of total businesses in the US. In the Arts-related sector, only a handful of businesses (relative to the number of Black-Owned businesses across all sectors) are Black-Owned – they fall within the Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation sector.

In support of National Black Business Month, New York Film Academy is highlighting just a handful of incredibly talented NYFA alumni who not only own a business and have earned success through their crafts but continue to build their brands in order to support other artists.

We encourage you to support these individuals by contributing to their business or sharing their incredible work.

NYFA Alum Bob Ahmed’s ‘Tikkun Olam’ Tackles Homelessness with Humanity in Award-Winning Short

Bob Ahmed opens his interview at the 2021 SEEMA Summit with a translation from a poem written by a famous Indian poet, Mirza Ghalib: “To be human is easy, but to be humane is almost impossible.” Thus was born the inspiration for his award-winning short Tikkun Olam (2021), which tackles the subject of homelessness in Washington, D.C. The short film is available to stream on Amazon Prime.

For anyone who has lived in the nation’s capital or is familiar with the city’s history of poverty, you may not be surprised by the alarming number of homeless, an issue that plagues veterans and civilians alike. Tikkun Olam is a poignant film that revolves around the love and humanity of an eight-year-old boy who encounters a homeless veteran.

Based on Ahmed’s own experiences while living in Washington, D.C., The Daily Times described the film as an “urgently needed story of hope in our broken world today” with “blistering performances”. Views & News describes the film as “a rare, polished gem” with “riveting performances”. Voice of America calls it “a unique film on an important topic”.

Tikkun Olam won almost universal acclaim garnering success on the festival circuit where the director’s choice to focus on his actors, putting them in a position to evoke truly intense emotional responses was rewarded. The film won ‘Best Short Film – Teens’ at the 22nd ShorTS International Film Festival in Trieste, Italy in July 2021. The short is also an official selection for the 35th Washington DC International Film Festival and the 27th Sedona International Film Festival, which is ranked amongst the “Top 10 film festivals in the world.”

“I studied at the New York Film Academy and that is where I really got inspired to make film, says Ahmed in an interview with South Asian icon, Aroon Shivdasani, at the 2021 SEEMA Summit.

Ahmed believes his role as the director is not to evoke emotion from his actors, but rather to remove the pressure from the set and create an environment in which the actors can create someone truly special on camera.

This approach with his actors which encourages them to do what they believe they would do in a scene (even if slightly different from the script) reaps rewards as the short film was also selected for the 21st D.C. Asian Pacific American Film Festival and selected for the 10th D.C. South Asian Film Festival.

The director is working on a new film, Johnny & The Golden Gifts about a young boy in Washington D.C, whose life spirals out of control because of a personal tragedy. The story explores themes of forgiveness as a solution to ongoing challenges in modern American Society.

Considered both a Director and Screenwriter, Ahmed also wrote, Lost in DC, about a Pakistani man who visits Washington, D.C. and runs into a former high school friend. The two men spend the next several days in each other’s company, learning more about the other’s path in life following their school days. The script is currently a finalist at the 52nd Nashville Film Festival, an Academy Award Qualifying Film Festival.

New York Film Academy congratulates Bob Ahmed for his success and looks forward to the upcoming Johnny & The Golden Gifts.

ELVIE NIU’S ‘WAY OUT’ A SEMI-FINALIST IN THE 2021 STUDENT ACADEMY AWARDS

BFA Filmmaking NYFA alum, Elvie Niu takes her place as a semi-finalist in this year’s Student Academy Awards. Her captivating short, Way Out (2021) explores feelings of isolation and abandonment felt by protagonist Jiang Lai after she is accused of murdering her father. The ongoing investigation impacts her strained relationship with her mother, who is distant and cold.

The film captures family tension with visual metaphors of loneliness and rejection and a backdrop of rural 1990s China. During this time, family values were considered part of a family’s moral upstanding within a community. In front of this socio-political front, Niu captures a series of breathtaking shots including China’s rural hillsides and farm animals. Medium and close-up shots reveal facial expressions that imply the failing relationship between the main character and her mother.

The one character whom Jiang does seem to trust is the small-town police investigator, Ren Pingsheng, who represents the sliver of sanity Jiang needs to escape her turmoil.

Based on her own childhood experiences, director Niu’s Way Out is a deeply personal story. After her parents separated during her youth, Niu faced an upbringing fraught with emotional distance, trauma, and feelings of insecurity. Evident in the short film’s visual depiction of gloom, Niu captures important scenes with low lighting, exaggerated shadows, and dark tints to emphasize isolation.

According to Niu, “The basis for my creation comes from sincerity, not just for the audience, but for myself.”

Before a student with the New York Film Academy (NYFA), Elvie was a Producer of a video promotion for Yao Ming’s Charity. The video promoted the organization’s ongoing efforts to help Tibetan children keep active with sports. Niu considers herself to be an eastern spirit with a western mind and finds success in projects that delve into urban life but touch on issues that relate back to her past.

A collaborative director and filmmaker, Niu believes in giving her crew creative space. Working closely with her actors, the director takes time to reach an emotional agreement on the art itself before making a process curating emotion.

For emerging filmmakers and students of the craft, Niu offers advice, “Your role as a director is to understand what you’re saying behind the scenes, and ask yourself, ‘does this make sense?’ That will result in the story you want to tell.

NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY (NYFA) WELCOMES EMMY-NOMINATED ACTRESS ELIZABETH OLSEN TO NYFA’S Q&A-LIST SERIES

New York Film Academy (NYFA) had the honor of hosting a live virtual Q&A with Emmy Nominated Elizabeth Olsen of Marvel’s Wanda Vision, the ever popular Disney+ limited series for NYFA students. TOVA LAITER, Director of the NYFA Q&A-List Series, curated and moderated the event.

New York Film Academy (NYFA) Welcomes Emmy-Nominated Actress Elizabeth Olsen to NYFA’s Q&A-List Series

Tova Laiter (Left) and Elizabeth Olsen (Right) for NYFA’s Q&A-List Series

Laiter began the Q&A with questions about her background.

Having participated in ballet classes at an early age, Olsen admits she has wanted to act as early as the age of 10 years. While in college, Olsen was a student of the Atlantic Acting School, during which she auditioned for off-Broadway and Broadway productions as an understudy.

Olsen’s love of theater and performance background lead her to study abroad at the Moscow Art Theatre School, where the actress claims she has “Never seen better theater in my life.” Given the longstanding history of Russian theater as the people’s entertainment, Olsen acknowledges that the regular rotation of productions, range of genres, and generations of acting knowledge passed down result in “some of the most creative theater I’ve ever seen in my life.” Olsen took this experience back home where she continues to build out her professional expertise across a wide range of projects.

The actress details her transition from independent films such as Liberal Arts (2012) and In Secret (2013) to her role as the Scarlet Witch in the Avengers’ film franchise.

The actress’s path to the Marvel Universe started with a conversation with her agent. With an interest in expanding her work to include broader ranges of film genres, Olsen soon found herself in very corporate meetings with studio heads at a global entertainment company, Legendary. With a chance to work alongside future Avengers’ co-star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Olsen was cast in the 2014 film Godzilla. Her success in this performance led to her consideration for the role of the Scarlet Witch.

Olsen blushed when thanking students for their high praise and congratulations on her many accomplishments. With the utmost modesty, the actress gave her own words of encouragement and advice for students new to the entertainment industry.

When asked about challenges she had faced in her early career, Olsen stood firm in her belief young actors shouldn’t be afraid to voice their concerns for roles or projects out of fear that they will not find work otherwise. To Olsen, it’s more important that actors keep true to themselves and maintain their own self of worth.

Image Source: Chicago Tribune, Elizabeth Olsen in the film In Secret (2013)

For new roles, the actress offers invaluable advice on research. For roles based on true events, like for an upcoming role where Olsen will play the infamous Texas housewife, Candy Montgomery in an HBO Max true-crime limited series, she advises actors to learn as much as they can from the source material. For Olsen, understanding as much context around a story or project gives her a sense of security around her role. A well-written script helps her find her voice, which in turn informs how she carries her body in a role. The actress asks ‘is there an accent? Dialect?’ This critical information allows her to decide how to breathe, posture herself and make physical changes to carry out a stellar performance.

When playing a villain, Olsen believes in bringing out the humanity of the character. To her, portraying a character in a way where audiences can see beyond the surface of a character, their depth, makes for a more interesting on-screen subject.

Students then asked the actress about her least favorite areas of acting. Very honest, Olsen answered, “working with the press.” Though not shy, the actress admits she is a fan of being herself in a role, so photoshoots, dressing in branded clothes, and giving interviews are not the aspects of her career that drive her. But she likes to give back and interact with students, Not surprisingly, the actress thrives when she’s on set, acting and giving a performance.

The actress will be reprising her role as Wanda Maximoff in the upcoming Disney’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, to be released on March 25, 2022. She described it as a scary movie, very Sam Raimi. Asked about the Wanda Vision twins appearing in a Young Avenger ‘ possible film, she said that she has no knowledge of it, it’s all up to Marvel.

Olsen was recently nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for her performance in WandaVision for ‘Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie’ in 2021.

The series was nominated for 23 Emmy’s.

New York Film Academy would like to thank Elizabeth Olsen for sharing his time and acting experience with NYFA students and alumni.
