Specifically designed for the iPad, Animation Creator HD packs in a ton of features. These include YouTube HD uploading, Twitter sharing, layers, frame management, scrub tool, full screen editing, paint brush, pencil, spray can, eraser, line tool, rectangle, image import, and much more. The app has tons of fantastic features, and is a well-rounded studio for the iPad animator.

Although deceptively simple and designed more for fun that serious animation tasks, this iPhone app is so functional and intuitive that it could be indispensible for a lot of stop animation projects. HD support, extremely fast rendering, automatic capture and settings galore, it’s not one to be overlooked.

An iOS app with a twist, Steller – a contraction of ‘story teller’ – is just that; a stunningly beautiful app which effortlessly combines photos, videos and text into a presentation-style animation which can be easily shared in-app.

Available for both Android and iOS devices, SketchBook Pro is a drawing app whose workflow environment will be fairly familiar to anyone who uses Adobe products. In fact, it’s the closest thing we’ve seen to a Photoshop/Illustrator replica.

A free version also exists (Sketchbook Express) for those looking to try before they buy.

Creating animated GIFs on a desktop can be something of a pain, but with an Android device and the Fixie GIF Camera app, those troubles will be a thing of the past. A superb piece of kit for those looking to create meme-style animations, or short GIFs to incorporate into larger animation projects.

This time-lapse app is great for putting together stop-motion animation. It's free to download, and with a $1.99 export option, this is one of the cheapest and versatile apps of its kind.

Animators can capture and export HD 720p footage in each of four capture modes, including time-lapse and wifi remoted. When you're done, you can edit the footage together and update it directly to YouTube, or export to email (in adition to sharing to an iTunes Sharing Folder.)

Flip-books are a popular first choice for beginning animators. StickDraw takes that concept and brings it into the 21st Century with this streamlined app. Whether you're dedicated to learning the art of animation or just want a fun hobby, this app can get you on the road to making animated movies right away.

In StickDraw, you can create stick figures or simple doodles and animate them into videos. The simple interface makes getting started a breeze. The basic app is free, but you can pay for an ad-free version.

Using time-lapse and stop-motion animation techniques, LookSee allows you to convert still images from your camera into an animated film. You can set up the app to capture frames through a proximity sensor, motion detector or sound triggering to catch footage without manning the camera yourself; you can also set it up remotely with a click of a button or by setting up a timer.

Once the footage has been captured, you can link it together into a seamless animation. You can also work in reverse by breaking a video into a series of still images, which can then be remixed into new videos or animated .GIFS

This animation app is designed for use on both iPhone and iPad, and it's created for easy integration with YouTube to share your creations. Animation Studio is a powerful app that works equally well for experienced animators and first-timers.

You can create animated figures with paint and airbrush tools or clipart. Graphics can be imported, and the app supports layers. You can also add voiceover and music tracks to customize your film.

If you want to start creating professional-looking animations right away, Toontastic is the perfect place to start. This app makes animation accessible to total beginners while giving you some creative freedom.

In Toontastic, you choose from a number of prebuilt characters and animate their actions into a puppet show. You can spice up the animation with a number of camera tricks, like pans, close-ups and parallax motion effects. When you're finished, you can share your creations with friends and family through the app's own storytelling network, ToonTube. Toontastic was built with children in mind, but it serves as a fun introduction to the basics of animation for aspiring animators of any age.
