Representatives from the New York Film Academy were on hand this past Sunday night for The Miss USA Pageant in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This year’s competition was strong as ever, as the 51 contestants were all very beautiful and talented. However, like any competition, the judges were forced to choose one winner, and we’re thrilled to offer Miss Nevada’s Nia Sanchez with a one-year scholarship (including housing) to a program of her choice at the New York Film Academy.
NYFA has been the school of choice for numerous Miss USA’s in the past, including Olivia Culpo who has since been seen as a co-host on Extra with Maria Menounos. Acting for Film graduate, and former Miss USA, Crystle Stewart plays the role of Leslie on Tyler Perry’s television show, For Better for Worse.
Congratulations to Nia Sanchez! We hope to see her come through our doors as a NYFA student in the near future!

Sony Pictures has recently announced that they will be producing a film regarding the controversial issue of concussions in professional football. The film, which will star Will Smith, is based on a GQ article entitled, Game Brain. With the evolution of fantasy football and additional games being broadcast outside of “Football Sunday,” the NFL has become the premier sport in terms of entertainment. But, this is nothing new. Over the years, Hollywood has turned to the popular sport to give its own perspective on the prevalent game we all know and love. The New York Film Academy decided to take a look back at some of these films which tackle football.
Any Given Sunday
Directed by Oliver Stone, a man who never shies away from controversial subjects, Any Given Sunday gives its audience a unique inside look at the gladiatorial-like atmosphere that is professional football. The film is comprised of an All-Star cast, including Al Pacino, Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid, James Woods, Jamie Foxx, and many more. The story revolves around a fictional team called the Miami Sharks and focuses on the potentially season ending injury of their aging star quarterback, Jack “Cap” Rooney. (A common occurrence for those of us who follow football.) We meet coach Tony D’Amato (Al Pacino) who is forced to replace his quarterback with erratic rookie Willie Beaman (Jamie Foxx). While the film has its ups and downs, capturing the on and off field drama associated with the organization, it does most certainly have its share of hard-hitting action. In fact, keep your eyes peeled for a jarring hit that causes one player to lose an eye.
Brian’s Song
A ‘sports movie’ classic. If your father or uncle hasn’t sat you down to watch this or if you haven’t sat down to show your own son or daughter, do yourself a favor and get on it! Brian’s Song is based on the real-life relationship between Chicago Bears’ players Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers as they both deal with the heart-breaking news that Piccolo is dying from embryonal cell carcinoma. Perhaps one of the most sappy and heartfelt sports movies of all-time, this is the one film in which men are allowed to cry.
It is more than 4,000 miles from Budapest to New York. Yet, when Hungarian videomaker Andras Takacs wanted to learn the skills essential to being a successful broadcast journalist, he came to the New York Film Academy’s School of Broadcast Journalism. That’s because NYFA “seemed to be THE place in the U.S. to learn digital journalism,” Takacs recalls.
His time at NYFA inspired him, and collaborator Eszter Cseke, to create the documentary series “On The Spot.” According to Andras, the series is “based on the method of working without a crew, getting much closer to people and their stories in the field.” So far the team has created 40 of these vivid, first-person programs, taking the production team from the revolution in Egypt to the aftermath of the devastating 2011 Fukushima earthquake in Japan. The series is seen on Hungarian Public TV, as well as Spektrum TV in central Europe.
“On The Spot” was honored with the Press Freedom Award in Strasbourg from the Council of Europe, the Prix Jury prize at the Tourfilm Festival and the Golden Nymph as Best Documentary at the Monte Carlo TV Festival.
Recently “On The Spot: Gaza” received a Gold Plaque for Investigative Reporting/News Documentary from the 2014 Chicago International Film Festival, and was selected Best Foreign Short Documentary at the 2014 American Documentary Film Festival. The report received rave reviews in publications worldwide, including the Financial Times.
Attending the New York Film Academy opens the door to a challenging career, giving you the opportunity to both learn essential skills as well as find your editorial “voice.”
Degrees were bestowed upon students by their Department Chairs.
Congratulations to the MFA, BFA, and Two-Year Program graduates of Film, Photography, and Acting disciplines at New York Film AcademyLos Angeles who received their degrees this past Saturday, May 24th. An audience of family and friends gathered in a Warner Bros. Studios theater for the momentous occasion. Chairs from each of the graduating students’ departments including Mike Civille (Filmmaking), Bobbi Fabian (Photography), and Lynda Goodfriend (Acting) addressed the students, applauding their achievement and offering words of advice for the future. Commencement Speaker Julie Ann Larson (Producer of The Drew Carey Show and Last Man Standing with Tim Allen, and Executive Producer of the Chelsea Handler written Are You There, Chelsea?) gave a humorous and profound speech in which she emphasized the value of higher education having come from a family in which nobody, including herself, had the opportunity to attend college.
In a happy twist, the Dean of Students (Eric Conner), before giving the Closing Remarks, presented a deeply touched Mrs. Larson with an Honorary Degree in the Discipline of Producing for her extraordinary accomplishments. We are extremely proud of NYFA LA’s most recent graduates and wish them the very best in their upcoming endeavors!

New York Film Academy graduate, Karsonya Wise Whitehead has recently released a book entitled, Notes from a Colored Girl: The Civil War Pocket Diaries of Emilie Frances Davis. In the book, Whitehead examines the life and experiences of Emilie Frances Davis, a freeborn twenty-one-year-old mulatto woman, through a close reading of three pocket diaries she kept from 1863 to 1865. Emilie’s world-views and politics, her perceptions of both public and private events, her personal relationships, and her place in Philadelphia’s free black community in the nineteenth century, are all explored. The diaries of Emilie Frances Davis is one of only a handful of resources written by a free black woman from the nineteenth century.
Whitehead’s book was resoundingly endorsed by Harvard Professor, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. “’To day has bin a memorable day. I thank God I have bin here to see it.’ So begins the pocket diaries of free black woman Emilie Davis of Philadelphia on the day of Emancipation at the midpoint of the Civil War. Her words also capture my feelings in seeing Davis’s diaries published under the expert eye of Karsonya Wise Whitehead, whose scholarly annotations not only set the scene but reveal how this ‘everyday’ domestic-dressmaker’s decision to record her thoughts at the critical hours of the African American journey was itself an emancipatory act.”
Since graduating from NYFA, Dr. Karsonya Wise Whitehead is now an assistant professor of communication and African and African American studies in the Department of Communication at Loyola University Maryland; a Master Teacher in African American History for intermediate, secondary and college teachers; the 2007 Gilder Lehrman Preserve America Maryland History Teacher of the Year; and, a three-time New York Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker.
In addition, she has been a featured speaker at the 2013 and 2014 White House Black History Month panels co-sponsored by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH).
New York Film Academy Screenwriting instructors, Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir continue their work in the field of graphic novels with the third in their series of AMY DEVLIN MYSTERIES. The new graphic novel, entitled LOST & FOUND, explores a cold kidnapping case that leads Amy Devlin into conflict with a powerful self-help group in Hollywood.
Times are tough for Amy Devlin, and without a case her financial situation is dire. Busting a cold case of kidnapping and murder from years ago may be the answer to her problems. Amy is sure that she can solve the case, but when the powerful, and untouchable, Life Science Institute of Hollywood gets involved, she may wind up with much more than just her reputation on the line.
LOST & FOUND is available in comic shops and at Amazon.com now. It features art by T.J. Kirsch (SHE DIED IN TERREBONNE) and lettering by Shawn DePasquale.
Not only that, THE AMY DEVLIN MYSTERIES are being developed as a TV series at E! Entertainment.
DeFilippis & Weir have the tenth volume of the Original English Language Manga, AMAZING AGENT LUNA also out in stores (it was released in March), and teach Writing For Sequential Art (in addition to Screenwriting) at NYFA.
