New York Film Academy (NYFA) South Beach Celebrates Art Basel 2019

New York Film Academy South Beach looks forward to Art Basel Miami Beach each year, an event where the city welcomes industry veterans, visual artists, and independent filmmakers alike. Studying at the epicentre of the festival, NYFA South Beach students and faculty draw inspiration from the eccentric art, installations, and events that the fair brings with it.

Art Basel is a for-profit, privately owned and managed international art fair staged annually in Basel, Switzerland; Miami Beach, Florida; and Hong Kong, selling the works of established and emerging artists and supporting galleries through nurturing artists. It’s known as a leading global platform that connects collectors, galleries, and artists from around the world.

Art Basel 2019

This year’s iteration of the annual event in Miami Beach presented artworks from across the globe through more than 250 of the world’s leading galleries, drawing over 70,000 visitors and offering an inspiring week for artists, collectors, critics, curators, and enthusiasts.

One particular installation this year captured the attention of all–life-size sand sculptures on Miami Beach, created by Leandro Erlich in an effort to compel people to face the dangers of climate change. Titled “Order of Importance,” the latest work of the Argentine artist was designed to disrupt the landscape while also blending with it. The City of Miami Beach commissioned the installation with an allocation of $300,000, and it was the first of its public art projects with an intentionally short life.

Art Basel 2019

NYFA South Beach checked out the installation site, equipped with “NYFA News” filming gear to interview those visiting the sand sculptures and hear their thoughts on the inventive art and its powerful message. Additionally, NYFA South Beach Special Effects instructor and cinematographer Carlos Fueyo was commissioned to create an official promotional video on the installation.

On campus, NYFA South Beach Dean and Director Maylen Dominguez conducted a Q&A with Carlos, touching on the art, the artist, his involvement in the project and what it’s like to be a filmmaker at Art Basel.

Art Basel 2019

“Art Basel exposes our students to thought provoking art, gallerists, artists and buyers form literally every corner of the world,” reflects Dominguez. “You see extraordinary work and things that are not to your taste. Art Basel is a great reminder that the important thing is to be creative and not judge yourself so much, because there’s someone out there who will buy the $120,000 duct-tape banana.”

New York Film Academy (NYFA) Photography Alum Denice Flores Exhibits ‘Naked Cowboy: The Backstory’

Most New Yorkers and countless tourists to the city have seen the Naked Cowboy, but probably never outside of Times Square; New York Film Academy (NYFA) Photography Alum Denice Flores is changing that with her new exhibition, Naked Cowboy: The Backstory.

The body of work is the latest from Flores, who hails from Honduras and graduated from NYFA’s 8-Week Photography Workshop at our New York campus in 2014. Naked Cowboy: The Backstory is Flores’s first at the Soho Photo Gallery in Tribeca and opened on December 3.

Naked Cowboy: The Backstory includes an installation as well as a slideshow that follows the life of Robert Burck, who has made himself a New York icon by performing as the Naked Cowboy in Times Square for years. Included in the exhibition will be some of his personal belongings, which will be on display in a recreated version of his living room.

Flores mixed traditional photographic methods with audio to create a digital presentation for Naked Cowboy, that together with the installation, gives a look into the subject’s life as an ordinary man, as well as his life as a performer and all that goes into it. The project continues the documentation of people’s inner lives that she has provided in her work since studying at NYFA.

Flores’s work will be displayed until December 21, and is her second exhibition in the US; her first, The Last Italians, was showcased at New York’s International Center of Photography in 2016.

New York FIlm Academy congratulates Photography alum Denice Flores on her latest exhibition and encourages everyone to check out Naked Cowboy: The Backstory at the Soho Photo Gallery.

New York Film Academy (NYFA) Welcomes Top CAA Agent Chris Andrews

On Tuesday, December 3, the New York Film Academy (NYFA) had the pleasure to host Chris Andrews, top talent agent at the industry-leading Creative Artists Agency (CAA). Tova Laiter, Director of the NYFA Q&A Series, moderated the event.

Chris Andrews

Andrews is based in Los Angeles and represents many of the Hollywood’s leading actors, including Daniel Craig, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Saoirse Ronan, Nicole Kidman, Jon Hamm, Ben Kingsley, Ian McKellen, Kristin Scott Thomas, Emily Blunt, and Edgar Ramirez, among others. He has been instrumental in the development and advancement of his clients’ careers around the globe.

Laiter opened the Q&A by asking Andrews how he became an agent and started with CAA. Andrews discussed his history in the industry, from working in the mailroom (“you meet everybody—agents and clients”) to his current work as one of the company’s top agents. Through his story and the entire session, Andrews emphasized the importance of hard work and ambition.

One student asked Andrews for advice on how to get an agent when first starting out in their craft. Andrews replied,  “Work brings work … if you can get one job it’ll lead to something else. Anybody you meet – write their name down, get their phone number, get their email address, remember that … keep it handy so that you have it. Don’t be like ‘Oh, I think I met her’… You should know who you’ve met along the way … you never know who you’re going to meet.”

Chris Andrews

Andrews left the students with some inspirational words. “Time is precious. It goes by really, really fast … Take it in … If you love film, if you love acting, if you love producing, if you love writing—read great writers, watch great directors, watch great actors. You will learn something, because it’ll teach you where the bar is higher … You have to live in that hope, still, of dreaming of ‘I can be better’ … that’s what propels me.”

New York Film Academy thanks CAA agent Chris Andrews for taking the time to share his experience and expertise with our students.

Fall Season of New York Film Academy Los Angeles (NYFA-LA) Student Directed Play Series Finishes Strong

The New York Film Academy Los Angeles (NYFA-LA) Acting for Film department finished off the Fall Season of their Student Directed Play series with two successful productions of Three Days of Rain, written by Richard Greenburg and directed by Alex Giarratano, BFA Acting for Film, and Private Lives, written by Noel Coward, and directed by Sara Sedran, BFA Acting for Film. The plays were mentored by full time faculty Riley Steiner and Cathy Giannone.

Three Days of Rain is a play by Richard Greenberg that was commissioned and produced by South Coast Repertory in 1997. Three Days of Rain was nominated for the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

“During the production of this show, one of the biggest things I learned was how to have total faith in my actors and crew to help me execute my artistic vision,” says student director Alex Giarratano of the experience. “I would say directing a play and getting so much help from my cast and crew restored my faith in humanity to some degree. I greatly look forward to tackling this process again and I just want to give you my thanks one more time for giving me this opportunity.”

[su_carousel source=”media: 33220,33221,33223,33222″ limit=”60″ link=”lightbox” target=”blank” width=”780″ height=”360″ title=”no” autoplay=”0″]

Private Lives is a 1930 comedy of manners in three acts by Noël Coward. It concerns a divorced couple who, while honeymooning with their new spouses, discover that they are staying in adjacent rooms at the same hotel. Despite a perpetually stormy relationship, they realize that they still have feelings for each other.

After touring the British provinces, the play opened the new Phoenix Theatre in London in 1930, starring Coward, Gertrude Lawrence, Adrianne Allen and Laurence Olivier. A Broadway production followed in 1931, and the play has been revived at least a half dozen times each in the West End and on Broadway. The leading roles have attracted a wide range of actors; among those who have succeeded Coward are Robert Stephens, Richard Burton, Alan Rickman, and Matthew Macfadyen, and successors to Lawrence have included Tallulah Bankhead, Elizabeth Taylor, Elaine Stritch, Maggie Smith, Kim Cattrall, Penelope Keith, and Lindsay Duncan. Directors of new productions have included John Gielgud, Howard Davies, and Richard Eyre. The play was made into a 1931 film and has been adapted several times for television and radio.

“I’ve always wondered what a director’s job was until I decided to direct a play for the first time,” says Sara Sedran about her experience. “It’s hard—even harder than I expected it to be. In it I found happiness, excitement, disappointment, frustration and what it means to be tired, because you are dedicating 120% of yourself to something you care about. I learned what passion means and how it helped me carry on and not give up. I learned about trust. Trust for my actors and crew members, but most of all trusting myself no matter if other people don’t. I learned the power of decision making and what it takes to be determined.

Directing is very much like drawing on commission with a permanent marker—you start from scratch to create your art piece, you choose all your tools but you can’t erase, only adjust and on top of that you only have a limited amount of time. Even though it might not sound like it, it’s the most fulfilling experience.”

If you are interested in directing a play at NYFA’s Los Angeles campus, we are now taking submissions for next semester’s Student Directed Play series until December 9. Please see the flyer below—we are especially seeking scripts with global impact and cultural diversity.

6 Underground is the latest blockbuster movie to feature NYFA Acting for Film alum Garcia-Rulfo, who attended NYFA’s 4-Week Filmmaking workshop as well as the 1-Year Acting for Film conservatory at our Burbank-based campus. Since graduating in 2004, the Mexican-born actor has starred in hit films including, Cake, Murder on the Orient Express, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, and Widows, as well as the television series From Dusk til Dawn and Goliath.

Garcia-Rulfo also appeared alongside an A-list cast in The Magnificent Seven remake directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Peter Sarsgaard. In 2017, Garcia-Rulfo spoke with students in a Q&A at our Los Angeles campus following a screening of the film. Next year, he will be co-starring with Tom Hanks in Greyhound, an upcoming World War II submarine thriller written by Hanks.

Manuel Garcia-Rulfo - 6 Underground

His latest project, 6 Underground, is the first film by action auteur Michael Bay since the third sequel to his Transformers franchise, The Last Knight. Ryan Reynolds leads the cast of the the R-rated comedic action-thriller about six vigilantes who’ve faked their deaths and go by numbers instead of names (One through Six, naturally.) Garcia-Rulfo co-stars as Three, while Reynolds plays One. They are joined by Mélanie Laurent, Adria Arjona, Corey Hawkins, and Ben Hardy as Two, Four, Five, and Six, respectively. The movie also co-stars Dave Franco and Peter Stormare.

6 Underground is the second-most expensive original film ever produced by Netflix, and is set to premiere Friday, December 13. In a video promoting the film, star Ryan Reynolds promises nonstop action and special effects, telling viewers, “Don’t miss the most Michael Bay movie that Michael Bay has ever Michael Bayed.”

New York Film Academy congratulates Acting for Film alum Manuel Garcia-Rulfo on his latest high-profile role, and is excited to see his star continue to rise in Hollywood!

New York Film Academy (NYFA) Broadcast Journalism Update – December 2019

While workplace events are starting to give way for holiday events, there is still a lot happening in the New York Film Academy (NYFA) Broadcast Journalism department.

We start off with good news from NYFA grad Clyde Gunter, who is starting a 13-month paid internship program next month at ESPN. Clyde will spend time assigned to various departments across the company, learning how this sports media giant works. At the conclusion, he’ll be given an opportunity to join the ESPN staff. Of course, this means moving to Connecticut where the ESPN “mothership” is located in Bristol. Congratulations, Clyde!

Continuing with sports, alum Gillian Kemerer—after winning a fellowship to study Russian in Moscow—is now producing a new program for the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), which has 24 member clubs in Belarus, China, Finland, Kazakhstan, Latvia, and Russia. After leaving NYFA, Gillian became the American programming chief (as well as lead US anchor/presenter) for Asset TV. But sports were always her first love, and now she’s found a way to combine hockey and TV. (I wonder how you say “slap shot” in Russian?)

Broadcast Journalism Update December 2019 Gillian Kemerer
The Fall 2019 1-Year Broadcast Journalism students had a chance to go behind the scenes at NBC News recently. Thanks to Col. Jack Jacobs (USA, ret.), who is a contributor to MSNBC, they got to visit a network control room, go out onto the studio floor where a program was taking place, plus get their pictures taken on the set of NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt. By the time our students graduate, they’ve already seen major production facilities.

Finally, we said goodbye to our Fall 8-Week Broadcast Journalism workshop students. As always, they came to NYFA with a variety of personal goals. They left with a deep skillset, and the knowledge that they are now multimedia journalists.

New York Film Academy wishes the recent grads the best of luck!

Amanda and PDN

Our full-time faculty Amanda Rowan has won the prestigious PDN Curator Award. This is a biennial award given to five photographers for exceptional fine art images. Rowan received this year’s recognition for her photo project Ritual. This series examines the intersection of seduction, mysticism, and performance within the realm of modern reproductive politics and traditional mating rituals.

Rowan attended the opening and week-long group show in New York City this past month. Photo District News produced the event, led by Holly Hughes. The group show was curated by:

Brent Beamon, Director of Flowers Gallery – NYC
Coco Conry, Gallery Director of Jackson Fine Art
Pauline Vermare, Cultural Director of Magnum Photos New York

The images from the winning photographers was published in October’s issue of PDN, focusing on fine art photography.

FAYN exhibition

FAYN’s latest iteration The Unseen Body arrived in September. We had a great turnout celebrating the launch of Issue #006! We exhibited the work in our Photo Arts Gallery, Los Angeles, and gave free copies of the magazine to all attendees.

The Unseen Body was inspired by the need for diversity in the representation of the human body in mainstream media. We hope to prompt deep discussions about how, as global imagemakers, we use our medium to make images of meaning. Our bodies carry us from our first day to our last. They are the holders of our stories; every blemish, scar, and mark is a part of us. Our bodies are inherently and uniquely our own and cannot be duplicated. And yet daily we are bombarded with images that tell us otherwise.

Service Learning: Pet Shoot

On December 2, our first-semester Lighting I students will be visiting the South LA pet shelter to photograph dogs and cats animals in need of a home. As part of our service and learning engaged curriculum, we are asking the students to evaluate three areas of service learning as they participate in this photoshoot and event:

Perspective Taking: the ability to engage and learn from perspectives and experiences different from one’s own and to understand how one’s place in the world both informs and limits one’s knowledge.

Social Responsibility: the ability to recognize one’s responsibilities to society–locally, nationally, and globally–and to develop a perspective on ethical and power relations both across the globe and within individual societies.

Cultural Diversity: the ability to recognize the origins and influences of one’s own cultural heritage along with its limitations in providing all that one needs to know in the world. The students will submit final images that they shoot and a 1.5 page reflection paper in response to their experience.

Darkroom Class

The black-and-white film photography class at NYFA is headed by Andrew Hall and has the darkroom at its heart. Offering hands-on experience of the art and craft of photography, this is our orange-lit haven in today’s storm of digital and manipulated imagery.

Getting back to the DNA of photography, students are introduced to the liberating process of creating their own images from scratch. This begins with processing their own films, then editing from contact prints, right through to creating beautifully crafted black-and-white prints, with a rich tonal range that remain unchallenged in their immediacy. The physicality of the entire endeavor enriches the photographers’ ability to communicate with their audience, and grants them ownership of the work in a unique way, when they have brought their whole project to life by their own skill, diligence and judgment.

The darkroom may be a Victorian creation, but thanks to the continued commitment of NYFA students and faculty, its creative relevance continues to evolve.

Alumni News

Our BFA Alumni Lotta Lementti was featured in a cover story for Float Magazine for her contemporary Still Life Images. “With the series The Ordinary, I want the viewer to share my sense of wonder and joy in the ordinary objects of everyday life. I want to give the audience a moment to appreciate the things we so often take for granted and overlook.”

Our Current BFA student Eric James Cabral is working on a personal project documenting iconic rap and hip hop artists, including Big Boi from Outkast and Ice Cube.

Graphic Design and Social Movements Class

Our Graphic Design and Social Movements class covered the history of the relationship between print, design, and social justice movements. In addition to this, students were also introduced to the digital and analog skills required to develop a graphic design practice that responds to a social issue. Topics we covered included: the abolitionist press, suffragist press, early environmental and labor movement press, various printmaking collectives, anti-war media, agit-prop, street art as intervention, and aspects of social media’s potential for advocacy projects.

We explored a variety of US and international graphic design styles, uses, and purposes as they relate to specific moments in various struggles for social justice. We surveyed these technological and stylistic specifics and the impacts design has played in launching, growing, and spreading these transformative moments through the social fabric. At the heart of the class was the necessary intersectionality of contemporary social movements that link racial capitalism, gender oppression, ableism, homo- and transphobia, and ecological devastation with each other.

Through this lens we looked back at the politics and movements of the past century (and a few examples of further in the past) to examine how movement graphics, presses, and arts collectives have built an inspiring constellation of liberatory determination for designers and activists of today to draw on. Students engaged with this history and potential by planning, designing, and printing their own publications that related to an issue or concern of their choice.

Sneak Peek to the new FAYN, which is now a class:

We are currently in production on our latest issue of FAYN, Gender and Sexuality.

We are privileged to publish FAYN in LA and be within an academic environment that encourages diversity of thought and expression. Despite this, we as a society are still systematically plagued by gender-based discrimination and sexual oppression. For this next issue of FAYN we will focus on imagery and content that examines your beliefs, constraints, and ideas of gender and sexuality.

We sought work that examines desire and the free expression of all genders and sexualities towards liberatory futures that free heteronormative patriarchal constructions that we have been conditioned to adhere to.

NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY AUSTRALIA’S UNPRECEDENTED PARTNERSHIP WITH WARNER BROS. MOVIE WORLD FOR THEME PARK HOT SETS

Visitors to Warner Bros. Movie World now have the chance to see filmmaking in action thanks to a first-of-its-kind partnership between the iconic Gold Coast theme park and New York Film Academy Australia.

Through the collaboration, film production hot sets will be installed on the grounds of Warner Bros. Movie World for NYFA Australia students to sharpen their skills in the various elements of film craft using state-of-the-art, industry standard equipment under the guidance of NYFA Australia faculty and staff.

Guests visiting the park will be able to watch the magic of movie making up close and in action, which falls in line with the movie-centric attractions of the popular vacation spot. Some guests may even be asked to participate in the hot sets, and serve as on-camera performers in the scenes filmed.

The interactive hot sets can be found off the theme park’s Main Street, near Gotham City Hall. Various films and student productions will be shot there; recently, NYFA Australia alumni even had the opportunity to shoot a promo video for hit90.9’s Breakfast show. One lucky student was chosen based on their pitch to work with popular radio hosts Lise Carlaw, Sarah Wills, Dan Anstey, and Ben Hannant to create the promo. NYFA Australia students aren’t just getting exposure on the radio; the theme park hot sets were also recently featured in a story on 7NEWS Gold Coast.

“In addition to offering our students the invaluable opportunity to participate on set,” says NYFA Australia Director, Tasha Cooper, “this unique partnership simultaneously offers guests to the park the premium, ‘movie magic’ experience they desire.”

Warner Bros. Movie World is one of the most popular destinations in Queensland for both locals and visitors, and is based on the characters and properties of the Warner Bros. film studio, including the iconic roster of DC Comics superheroes like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. The park is operated by Village Roadshow Studios (VRS), which has a long-standing relationship with NYFA Australia. Throughout their studies, NYFA Australia students also have the opportunity to shoot films on the VRS backlot, where NYFA Australia houses its own production workshop studios. The VRS backlot has been home to some of the biggest movies of the decade, including Aquaman, Thor: Ragnarok, and San Andreas.

“Movie World and NYFA Australia share an affinity for the film industry on the Gold Coast and I am excited at the prospects of this unique partnership,” shares Michael Croaker, Head of Entertainment for Village Roadshow Theme Parks. “Excitingly, Movie World guests will have the opportunity to watch a real ‘hot set’ operating in the park with a few even getting the chance to get in on the action themselves.”

New York Film Academy Australia is thrilled to partner with Warner Bros. Movie Studios for this innovative approach to instructing students in the craft of filmmaking and preparing them for the bustling dynamics of professional, real world film sets.

All programs and workshops are solely owned and operated by the New York Film Academy Australia and are not affiliated with Village Roadshow Studios.
