Using 3D software, we will cover some of the twelve basic principles of Animation introduced by the Disney animators Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas in their 1981 book The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation. These principles of animation underlie everything animators do, from making movies to video games. We will explore how they can be applied to everyday objects and characters.
The Online 3D Animation for Kids camps consist of 6 hour modules (three modules offered in this discipline) which can be completed either after school or on Saturdays. If Kids are taking the module after school, each module runs for one week. Saturday programs, each module run for four consecutive Saturdays. Students may enroll in all three modules or select and complete individual modules (students are not required to complete one module to attend the next).
• New students will need to take all three modules. If you have studied Animation online with us before, you may take all three modules or select individual modules.
• Animation Software (details will be shared in the first class)
• A Microsoft or Mac laptop or desktop computer with a minimum of 16 GB and a three button external mouse.
For each module, there are two schedule options:
• One week for each module
• Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. PST
• Four consecutive Saturdays for each module
• Saturday at 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m EST
Tuition: $300 USD for each module
Module One: Squash and Stretch
In this module, students will learn squash and stretch, the first principle of animation. It introduces the notion of how a change of shape such as a squash pose to a stretch pose gives the illusion of gravity, weight, mass, flexibility and life into animation. Without squash and stretch, the animation is rigid and stiff to the motion.

Module Two: Anticipation, Follow Through and Overlap
In this module, students learn two of the principles of animation. Anticipation which introduces the character getting prepared to perform an action. It prepares the viewer for what’s about to happen. The second principle we will cover is follow through and overlap. This principle helps to render movement more realistically by obeying the laws of physics. Students will learn how to make a pendulum swing and an object jump.

Module Three: Walk Cycles
In this module, students will combine what they learned from squash and stretch, anticipation, follow through and overlap lessons into their walk cycle. Students will learn how to make a character move and walk in their own stylistic ways.
