  • Indian Film Festival Los Angeles and New York Film Academy Renew their Partnership in 2018

    The New York Film Academy (NYFA) is proud to be a promotional partner of the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA), the premiere showcase of groundbreaking Indian cinema. Screening from April 11-15 at Regal LA Live, this year’s lineup features award-winning new work from Indian filmmakers around the world, and NYFA alumni, students, faculty, and staff will be on hand to experience it from beginning to end.

    “I’ve been attending the Indian Film Festival since 2004, when I introduced and moderated a shorts program and Q&A,” said directing instructor Nick Sivakumaran. “The window it presents into the diversity and quality of Indian cinema never ceases to amaze me.”

    IFFLA 2018 Opening Night Film In The Shadows stars Manoj Bajpayee, Ranvir Shorey, and Neeraj Kabi, in a drama about surveillance and memory.

    IFFLA has graciously invited NYFA students to two programs of short films on April 13 and 14, and provided the NYFA student community a discount code for $2 off tickets.  

    Filmmaking Department Coordinator Prarthana Joshi noted that she had already watched several of the short films, and was excited to see the features — particularly Bornila Chatterjee’s The Hungry, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus, that was screened at the Toronto Film Festival last September.  

    “Bornila Chatterjee is a young female filmmaker working outside of the traditional Bollywood system,” said Prarthana. “I’m really looking forward to seeing her film and learning more about how she is making her career happen.”

    Rima Das’s “Village Rocksters” features a powerful female-led narrative and will be the Closing Night film of IFFLA 2018. The screening will be preceded by an Awards Ceremony featuring a prestigious jury: Reza Aslan, Saudi filmmaker Haifaa Al-Mansour, and Sundance breakout Aneesh Chaganty.

    Acting for film student Pauline Yang (Fall 2017 1 Year Acting for Film) will be volunteering for the Festival. “I really like being a part of film festivals because it brings a community together,” she said. “Everyone is always so excited to be a part of it, and the audience seems to always have a great time.”  

    In addition, NYFA alumni Rukmani Jones (Jan 2009 MFA Producing) and Ruchi Kishore (Sep 2012 MFA Filmmaking) both work for the Festival, with Rukmani serving as Filmmaker Liaison and Ruchi as Volunteer Manager.  

    “This is my fourth year being involved with the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles,” said Ruchi, “And with every year my love and appreciation for the IFFLA community grows deeper.”

  • NYFA Grad & Instructor’s Doritos Commercial Finalist to Air on Super Bowl

    With the NFL Playoffs in full swing, remaining teams are battling it out on the field for their dream of playing in the biggest sporting event of them all: the Super Bowl. Comparatively, creative directors, ad agencies and filmmakers have been competing all year for the opportunity to have their ad broadcast on what is also the “Super Bowl for commercials.” Such is the case for New York Film Academy Los Angeles Senior Directing Instructor Nick Sivakumaran, Filmmaking alum Dave Horowitz, as well as writer Richard Jindapornsuk for their entry into the Doritos “Crash the Super Bowl” contest. Their hilarious spec commercial, The Lemonade Stand, was announced as one of ten finalists to potentially air during the Super Bowl XLIX broadcast—one selected by fan votes and the other by the Doritos brand. Not only that, if the trio receives the most votes, they will win a guaranteed $1 million grand prize!

    “We’re thrilled to be selected as Finalists and cherish the opportunity to have The Lemonade Stand air during the Super Bowl,” said director Sivakumaran. “It would be an incredible honor to have a project I directed viewed by over 110 million people.”

    The team’s 30 second spot already aired on NBC’s The Today Show during Matt Lauer and Carson Daly’s segment that announced the finalists.

    Each of the 10 “Crash the Super Bowl” finalists are invited to Arizona to attend Super Bowl XLIX and watch the game from a private suite, where they will tune in to learn which finalist ads will air for the world to see. The eight finalists whose commercials don’t air during the broadcast will each win $25,000. The runner-up whose ad airs, but does not receive the most fan votes, will win $50,000. The Super Bowl XLIX broadcast will be on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015, on NBC in the United States and local broadcast networks around the world.

  • NYFA LA Senior Directing Instructor’s ‘Beyond Sight’ to Open at Stella Adler in Hollywood

    Beyond SightSenior Directing Instructor at New York Film Academy Los Angeles, Nick Sivakumaran’s play, Beyond Sight, which he co-wrote with Jeremy Aldridge, opens Friday, April 25 at the Stella Adler Theatre in Hollywood and ends on May 25th. The award-winning creative team and dynamic cast includes Theatre By The Blind and Military Veteran artists.

    Beyond Sight is the story of Jack Carter, a committed ROTC cadet driven to answer the call of duty in the wake of a catastrophic event. Blinded in Afghanistan, Jack returns home forever changed, forced to face the challenges of reintegrating into society without sight.

    The source material for Beyond Sight was taken directly from the production team’s work at CRE Outreach. The program began 2007 to empower military veterans and the visually impaired through the performing arts, including the highly successful Theatre by the Blind program.

    “With Beyond Sight we hope to launch a larger discussion about how we treat our veterans – and drive home the point that disabilities do not define us,” says Greg Shane, Artistic Director.
