New York Film Academy (NYFA) Soccer Program Takes Home Two Trophies

The men’s soccer program at New York Film Academy’s Los Angeles campus took home two Third Place trophies, now having a total of eight since the program’s establishment in 2014. The program is part of NYFA-LA’s Athletic Department, headed by Director, Elise Cregg.Men's Soccer 2018

The men’s soccer head coach, Roy Lev-Ari, says both teams have flourished into groups of young men, working individually and collectively towards their academic and athletic goals. “It’s been a pleasure seeing the development of both teams,” declared Lev-Ari, “they’ve really dedicated themselves to each other and the team, keeping each other accountable and relying on one another.”

The efforts of the men’s soccer teams have cultivated the program into one of discipline, dedication, and resilience. Coach Lev-Ari works consistently with his players to help strengthen their mental stamina and develop the ability to succeed under high pressure, in addition to teaching them how to effectively communicate and build respect for one another.

Men's Soccer 2018“We had a rough start at the beginning, but a few weeks into the season our leaders stepped up willingly and helped unite the group,” added Lev-Ari. “Our Captain Diego Vicenti (MFA Filmmaking Fall 2016) leads the squad with undeniable talent and heart, and another alum, Alessio Mongardi (BFA Acting January 2015), sets the standard in effort and dedication for the new players. Our all-star goalkeeper Michael Sumner (January 2014 MFA Screenwriting) and the tremendously talented Nurmat Sakebaev (Summer 2015 BFA Filmmaking) make invaluable contributions to the team on a weekly basis.”

Diego Vicenti, Captain, reflected on the season: “It’s been a lot of fun competing with these guys and growing as a team; for some of us, this team has become another family outside of NYFA and away from home.” He continued, “I’m proud of all the boys! It took a lot of hard work but it’s all worth it.”

Men's Soccer 2018

Coach Roy Lev-Ari is beyond excited and already working towards next season. “The boys are hungry for the championship title. I believe all the work we’ve put forth these past few seasons will come together and give us major success.”

The men’s soccer team continues to compete in the Universal Soccer League on Sunday and Monday nights.

New York Film Academy (NYFA) and GreenLight Women Q&A with the Filmmakers of “Stuntwomen”

Stuntwomen Q&AOn Saturday, November 10, New York Film Academy and GreenLight Women hosted a screening of the documentary, Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story, followed by a Q&A with director, April Wright; producers, Michael Gruskoff and Marion Rosenberg; and stuntwoman, Amy Johnston; with the event moderated by Rosenberg. Afterward, students were able to meet the panelists and discuss the film at a reception in the lobby.

April Wright is a director, writer, and producer known for the films, My BFF (2015), The Graveyard Shift (2010), and Layover (2009). Michael Gruskoff is a producer known for the films, Prelude to a Kiss (1992), Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), and Young Frankenstein (1974). Marion Rosenberg is a producer known for the films, Revolutionary Road (2008), Hollow Man (2000), and The Deer Hunter (1978). Amy Johnston is a stuntwoman known for the films, Deadpool (2016), Suicide Squad (2016), and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014).

Rosenberg opened up the Q&A by inquiring about how all of the panelists came to be involved in the film. Wright shared that she had already worked on an archive-heavy documentary, so she felt like she could take on the challenge of bringing the book, Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story, by Mollie Gregory to life.

Wright asked herself, “How can we bring this into the present [and] not just make it a history [documentary] but really, you know, what are stuntwomen doing today? And bring it up to the present and have some action in the movie so that it wouldn’t be all ‘talking heads.’”Stuntwomen Q&A

Wright added that the timing of the documentary and its subject matter felt especially relevant as there have been movements in Hollywood recently to push for more inclusion of women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ community in various roles behind the scenes. “We felt like this group of stuntwomen represented the bigger picture,” Wright said, “It was just sort of this microcosm of what was happening in the whole industry [and] all the things that [women have] been fighting for for all these years.”

Rosenberg asked Johnston what the film meant to her as a stuntwoman. “One of the questions I always get asked is ‘how do you become a stuntwoman and why are you a stuntwoman?’” said Johnston. “This is so important to share vital information about how we do things and why we do things.” She added that the film taught her about the history of stuntwomen in the earlier days of the film industry, “I learned how much these women paved the way for us.”

Though strides have been made for the stuntwoman community in terms of job opportunities and safety, Wright and Johnston look forward to even more progress being made in the future.

The New York Film Academy would like to thank April Wright, Michael Gruskoff, Marion Rosenberg, and Amy Johnston for sharing their riveting documentary and positive message about inclusion in Hollywood.

New York Film Academy (NYFA) Broadcast Journalism Alumni Cover California Wildfires

As anyone who follows American media knows, stories about President Donald Trump and his administration have monopolized the news for months. But this week, an even bigger story dominated the headlines. Two massive California wildfires, one in the mountains of Northern California and the second in coastal Southern California, have devastated communities and resulted (as of today) in the deaths of more than 50 people. An additional 100+ people are missing.

News coverage of these tragedies has served an important public service function. And two New York Film Academy (NYFA) Broadcast Journalism school graduates are on the scene, documenting the fires and their aftermath.

NYFA alum Celina Liv Danielsen, along with photographer Thomas Hass, are there working for the Danish television network DK2. Earlier this week, they visited what remained of a small Northern California town ironically called Paradise. It wasn’t an easy assignment, one which takes an emotional as well as physical toll…

Karen Hua is also a NYFA graduate. She is reporter with the NBC TV station in the Southern California city of Bakersfield. While not threatened by fire — at least not yet — area residents have experienced the side effects of these blazes for months. Karen wrote earlier this week:

“The fires in Southern California are relatively close to us in Bakersfield. We’re a 2-hour drive from the Ventura/Malibu area, and we’ve been covering them extensively…

“Ultimately I’m okay, and everyone in Bakersfield is safe — there aren’t too many trees in our city to spread flames. However, we’ve seen toxic air quality and heat as a result of the fires around the state this year. This summer was terrible with the Carr, Medicino, and Ferguson Fires. There were days when the entire city was advised to stay indoors. But we are fortunate we are all safe.”

There are many ways to cover the same story. A digital producer/editor, working at ABC News headquarters in New York, created a powerful story for the ABC late night news program Nightline. The story, distributed over multiple platforms, captured the sheer terror of what is taking place…

Broadcast Journalism Update

Public Television took a somewhat different approach. Friend and former colleague Miles O’Brian was in California shooting material for an upcoming episode of the popular Nova science series. While his focus was on previous wildfires, he and his team found themselves in the middle of a new “mega-fire,” an event so large that it literally creates its own weather. Miles was interviewed  on the PBS NewsHour, for which I once produced.

Broadcast Journalism Update

As commentator Richard Reinhold noted earlier this year in TVNewsCheck, increasingly local TV news reporters are becoming “first responders,” often arriving on the scene of major events at the same time (or even before) police, fire, and emergency medical teams.

That’s why it is so important that we get the story right. People will act on the information we give them. We have to make sure it is accurate.

NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY (NYFA) ACTING ALUM EVE HEWSON STARS IN ROBIN HOOD

Sherwood Forest is about to get a visit from a New York Film Academy (NYFA) alum — Acting for Film camp graduate Eve Hewson, who is starring as Marian in Hollywood’s latest blockbuster production of Robin Hood.

Hewson hails from Dublin, Ireland, the second of four children born to activist Ali Hewson and Paul Hewson, better known as U2 frontman, Bono. In 2008, Hewson attended one of New York Film Academy’s summer camps for teens, studying Acting for Film.

After attending NYFA’s Acting for Film camp, Hewson went on to roles in the Sean Penn film This Must Be the Place, the Clive Owen film Blood Ties, and Enough Said, the critically acclaimed romantic comedy-drama that ultimately became one of James Gandolfini’s final roles.

In 2014, Hewson won a co-starring role on the Cinemax drama The Knick, starring Clive Owen and André Holland. Shortly after that, she played the daughter of Tom Hanks’ character in the Academy Award-nominated drama Bridge of Spies, directed by Steven Spielberg.

In 2015, Hewson spoke with New York Film Academy students in a Q&A following a screening of The Knick. Among other pearls of wisdom offered to the aspiring actors and film and visual artists in the crowd, Hewson told the audience, “I remember one teacher told me, when I was here at NYFA summer camp [to be] ‘as rebellious as you want with your acting.’”

Hewson continued, “You have to find what works for you and what makes you excited… do the work that makes you feel confident, because there are no rules.”

Her latest role will be as Marian in Columbia Pictures’ Robin Hood, the latest in a tradition of Hollywood blockbusters about the legendary English folk hero (the first film featuring the character came out 110 years ago — Robin Hood and His Merry Men (1908). Hewson will be starring alongside lead Taron Egerton (Kingsmen: The Secret Service), Jamie Foxx, Jamie Dornan, F. Murray Abraham, and Ben Mendelsohn as the villainous Sheriff of Nottingham.

Robin Hood was directed by Otto Bathurst and written by Ben Chandler and David James Kelly. The film will be released the day before Thanksgiving, on November 21. It’s no surprise Hewson’s career is steadily growing—the young actress is not afraid to put in the work needed to win coveted roles.

At her NYFA Q&A, she advised students, “Try to do as much preparation as you can, so [casting directors] really like you. And try not to worry.”

The New York Film Academy congratulates NYFA Acting alum Eve Hewson on landing her biggest role yet, and looks forward to seeing the many that are sure to follow!

Please note: NYFA does not represent that these are typical or guaranteed career outcomes. The success of our graduates in any chosen professional pathway depends on multiple factors, and the achievements of NYFA alumni are the result of their hard work, perseverance, talent and circumstances.

NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY WELCOMES CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER AS GUEST SPEAKER

On Wednesday, November 7, the New York Film Academy hosted actor and comedian Cedric the Entertainer after a screening of Barbershop (2002). The event was moderated by Tova Laiter, NYFA Director of the Q&A Series, and Amari Agee, NYFA Alum.

Cedric the Entertainer is considered one of the “Original Kings of Comedy” and the roster of his acting credits include The Steve Harvey ShowBarbershopMadagascarThe Soul ManThe Last O.G., including his current CBS series: The Neighborhood. His universal appeal, versatility, and tremendous career solidified his standing as one of the premier entertainers in the world. In July 2018, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

New York Film Academy Welcomes Cedric the Entertainer As Guest Speaker
Laiter asked Cedric to talk about how he started in the business. Cedric performed stand-up in his hometown of St. Louis, having been inspired by Jamie Foxx, Martin Lawrence, and Eddie Murphy. “That was how most of us guys came into television and film,” Cedric told the audience, “you started by being a stand-up…”

Later in the the Q&A, a student asked about the origin of the “Cedric the Entertainer” name. He fondly reminisced about being booked for a 30 minute stand-up show that paid more but not having enough jokes to fill the time. “I would sing, I would do a poem, I’d play a record, I would do a whole dance routine…” Cedric said to the emcee, “Don’t call me a comedian, ‘cause I don’t have enough jokes. Call me a entertainer.”

The name stuck, and the rest is history.

Agee, who now works for the animation studio Illumination (MinionsThe Grinch), asked Cedric if he could talk about his experiences as a voice actor for animated films. He explained that it was a very different experience because, “it’s just you, the booth, the writer, the producers…” rather than being with the rest of the cast.

New York Film Academy Welcomes Cedric the Entertainer As Guest Speaker
Cedric also spoke to how flexible you need to be for voice over roles: “[The director] says you might be jumping off a building, so do one where you’re like ‘ahhhh’ — but I might have y’all running, so then I want you to breathe with it…. you gotta be willing to go in and out.” According to Cedric, the only bad side of voice acting is when the movie ends, they show outtakes of him jumping up and down in an empty room during the credits.

Another student asked for advice on doing his first stand-up set. Cedric told him, “The real thing about stand-up is individuality. It comes from the experience you had, the way that you see life, the way that you can word something… try to take that truth on stage. It’s the best thing that works.”

The New York Film Academy thanks Cedric the Entertainer for sharing his entertainment industry knowledge and anecdotes with NYFA’s aspiring actors and film students!

These guests are not faculty and do not teach at NYFA, but they have appeared to share their stories and experience with our students. As guest speakers are scheduled based on their availability, NYFA cannot guarantee whether a guest speaker will visit during a student’s attendance or who that guest speaker may be. This guest speaker forum is not part of any NYFA curriculum and attendance at guest speaker events is purely voluntary. Students should be aware that guest speaker events do not represent a job opportunity nor are they intended to provide industry connections.

New York Film Academy South Beach Students Attend 8th Annual Recent Cinema From Spain

Earlier this November, students from New York Film Academy’s South Beach campus attended the opening night of the 8th Annual Recent Cinema From Spain film series in Miami, Florida.

Recent Cinema From Spain is produced by EGEDA US and The Olympia Theater in collaboration with the ICAA and the Centro Cultural Español in Miami (CCEMiami), and has run for the past seven years. The aim of the festival is to celebrate Spanish culture, including everything from art to music to food, and of course, film.

This year’s Recent Cinema From Spain showcased six films, including Carmen Y Lola, Petra, Everybody Knows, and the US premiere of The Realm, a political thriller by the producers of Secret in Their Eyes.

The opening night was Thursday, November 8 and included a red carpet event at the Olympia Theater, a landmark institution built in 1926 that has been a frequent hub of activity for the South Florida arts community. It was attended by, among others, several Spanish film celebrities as well as EFE Agency and Hola TV.

Roughly a dozen students from New York Film Academy (NYFA) attended. This included students from NYFA South Beach’s BFA Acting for Film program, BFA Filmmaking program, and MFA Filmmaking program. NYFA’s degree programs are offered to and designed for students who wish to integrate intensive professional training with a comprehensive liberal arts education, helping them to become fully prepared for their chosen career path in the performing and visual and entertainment arts. In addition to the students who attended, a crew of three were able to conduct interviews on the red carpet. This included Steven Fares as the interviewer, Florencia Portieri as camera operator, and Ramon Burki as still photographer.

The NYFA South Beach students who attended Recent Cinema From Spain had a wonderful time, and were greatly appreciative of the exposure to the Spanish culture offered by the festival.Recent Cinema from Spain

Maylen Dominguez, Campus Director and Chair of Filmmaking of NYFA South Beach, reinforced this point, saying, “The Recent Cinema From Spain Festival held in Miami was a fun and inspiring opportunity for our students to get to meet actors, see a different style of filmmaking, and watch their fellow peers on the red carpet doing press in a professional manner.”

No doubt the NYFA students who attended were inspired to get back to their studies and work on their own films that may very well be screened at the next Recent Cinema From Spain fest!

New York Film Academy (NYFA) Hosts Q&A with Cast & Crew of “Killer Under the Bed”

Killer Under the BedOn Friday, October 26, New York Film Academy (NYFA) hosted a screening of Lifetime’s Killer Under the Bed (2018), followed by a Q&A with director and NYFA instructor, Jeff Hare; producer, Ken Sanders; director of photography, Brad Rushing; and stars, Brec Bassinger and Madison Lawlor. The event was moderated by NYFA instructor, David Newman.

Hare is a writer, director, and filmmaking instructor at New York Film Academy’s Los Angeles campus, and has been working as a director of thrillers for the Lifetime channel for the last few years (A Lover Betrayed, Psycho In-Law, Nanny Killer).

Sanders is a prolific producer for the Lifetime channel who has accumulated over 60 movie credits in the last 30 years (Accused at 17, Double Daddy, Stalked by My Doctor).

Rushing’s career as a director of photography began with some small features in the 1990s then expanded into the music industry with music videos for Eminem, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Blink-182 and more. Rushing then moved back to film and television, and ultimately made his way to the Lifetime channel where he now works as a DP on many of its thrillers.

Bassinger is an actress known for her roles in ABC’s The Goldbergs and Nickelodeon’s Bella and the Bulldogs and School of Rock. Lawlor is an actress known for her roles on TNT’s Franklin and Bash, Netlfix’s Dear White People, and the film, Daddy Issues (2018). The film also stars Kristy Swanson, eponymous star of the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Moderator David Newman opened up the Q&A by asking about the inspiration for the film. Producer Ken Sanders explained that he was approached by the film’s writer about producing a movie about a voodoo doll; Sanders knew that there would have to be more meat to the story to get executive producers interested, so he began thinking about the topic.

Sanders then remembered a TV movie from his childhood that “terrified a generation” called Trilogy of Terror; in this film, the protagonist struggles to escape from an evil doll she purchases at an antique shop. Sanders decided to combine the voodoo concept and the evil doll concept into one, and, in a sense, remake Trilogy of Terror for a modern audience. It was important to him, though, that this film appeal to “multiple markets” and not just a “hardcore horror audience.”

Newman went on to ask the panel about how they handled their tight shooting schedule — the Killer Under the Bed production team only had 14 days to shoot a feature-length film, which is less than half the time that most features take to shoot. DP Brad Rushing advised, “Be prepared… Meticulously know what you’re doing… [Have] contingency plans… and good communication with the producer and the director.” Killer Under the Bed

Rushing added that he and director Jeff Hare had worked together before, and were largely on the same page aesthetically when it came to the look of the film.

Newman inquired about how the team made the voodoo doll come to life onscreen. “Most of the doll’s motion was actual[ly] mechanical,” said director Jeff Hare, “it’s trying to keep that aesthetic of that 70s stuff [that] scared us… we tried to keep as many effects as we could practical and we also stole the whole Jaws thing of trying to keep it hidden for as long as we possibly could.”

“I think oftentimes what you don’t see is a lot more frightening,” added Brad Rushing, “because the audience fills it in with their own imagination and personalizes it as their own boogeyman.”

The New York Film Academy thanks Jeff Hare, Ken Sanders, Brad Rushing, Brec Bassinger, and Madison Lawlor for sharing their insights about making an independent thriller on a tight budget and in a short timeframe!

New York Film Academy (NYFA) BFA Student Sungho Chun Screens Film at Cinema Italian Style

This Thursday evening, New York Film Academy (NYFA) Student Sungho Chun will screen his film, Departure, at Cinema Italian Style as part of the festival’s short film competition.

Chun hails from Korea, and moved to the United States after serving in the South Korean military. He is currently studying for his BFA in Filmmaking at NYFA’s Los Angeles campus. The program entails a total immersion in the craft of filmmaking, including classes in directing, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, and producing. Students write, direct, shoot, and edit their own films in both film and digital formats, so it is no surprise that Chun has already put together an award-nominated movie.

Departure stars Dylan Nuttall and Lara Bayer and tells the story of a man preparing to take his own life when a woman comes along and changes his fate. Chun says the film is inspired by Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Dreamers. Describing Departure to Cinema Italian Style, Chun says “In my film, The Man also rejects the truth of the world.” Expounding on this, Chun told New York Film Academy, “The reason I picked that film is that I like the way it expresses a young generation’s belief.”Sungho Chun Departure

This connection to Bertolucci’s The Dreamers is what qualifies Chun’s film for Cinema Italian Style, a festival presented by Luce Cinecittà and The American Cinematheque that showcases the best Italian films of the year. This year is the fest’s 14th edition, and is supporting this year’s Italian entry to the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Dogman. Their student film competition highlights short films under 5 minutes in length that are inspired by or pay homage to classic Italian cinema.

Last year, NYFA alum Sebastiano Caccetta attended Cinema Italian Style, promoting cinema and music for one of the festival’s sponsors, the Italian Trade Agency. “Today my ability to work with Cinema Italian Style, it’s because of NYFA,” he told the Academy. “I’m working promoting Italian cinema for the government thanks to NYFA. I’m so grateful.”

Chun filmed Departure using crew and equipment came from NYFA, as well as his actors. He tells NYFA,  “I was so proud to work with them. Despite high temperatures for an outdoor shoot, nobody complained or frowned through the process. I’m especially thankful to my DP, Theresa, who held up the RED camera for the entire day because of our one-take method. No matter how heavy it got, she encouraged me to try again and again to get the film exactly how I wanted it. Only with the support of my team could I make it this far.”

Sungho Chun’s film, Departure, will screen at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica on the evening of Thursday, November 15. The New York Film Academy encourages anyone who can to attend Cinema Italian Style and see the film, and support Chun as his filmmaking career begins to take off. For more information and to RSVP, please visit HERE.

NYFA congratulates Chun on his well-earned success and wishes him the best of luck at this year’s Cinema Italian Style!

Forbes Interviews New York Film Academy (NYFA) Broadcast Journalism Alum Alana Blaylock

New York Film Academy (NYFA) Alum Alana Blaylock has had a productive career since finishing the 8-week Broadcast Journalism workshop at NYFA’s New York City campus in the summer of 2011. It’s no surprise then that many in the indAlana Blaylockustry have taken notice of the Emmy Award winner, including Forbes Magazine, which recently published a profile on and interview with the up-and-coming producer.

Blaylock has amassed an inspiring roster of credits since finishing her workshop at NYFA’s Broadcast Journalism school, which teaches aspiring reporters a well-rounded understanding of all aspects of the production process, including researching, writing, shooting, producing, and editing. This is important in the modern digital landscape as contemporary broadcast journalists are expected to be multimedia journalists, marrying their technical skills with their creative ones.

This is exactly what Blaylock has excelled at, and why she has already won an Emmy and why her career is taking off even as her path winds between both traditional roads and outside-the-box ones. Her credits include work on CNN, HBO, NBC News, National Geographic, and the ID Channel, including popular programs Deadline and United Shades of America. However, her work on newer streaming models like Amazon and YouTube is what has been generating a lot of buzz.

One of her latest projects is producing for Best Shot, a YouTube Originals docuseries executive produced by Lebron James and Maverick Carter for the NBA. The show follows the student basketball players of Newark Central High School as well as chronicling the life and career of their mentor, former NBA player and sports television personality Jay Williams.

In addition to working in both traditional and digital media, Blaylock curates a strong online presence on social media, further highlighting her smart instincts in an ever-changing media landscape.

“I love the visual storytelling that happens on Instagram,” Blaylock tells Forbes. “That’s the platform I probably use the most [in my personal life]. And I am inspired by movies, set design, museums, exhibits and artists.”

She continues, “I try to take in as much new culture as possible and then decide what I want to do with it or how it fits into my process as a creative.”

What lies ahead for Blaylock remains to be seen, but it’s clear whatever she does next will be insightful and successful due to the work she puts in and the philosophy that keeps her driven. When asked about keeping her own personal voice while working on other parties’ projects, Blaylock tells Forbes, “My brand evolves as I attain more world experience. I have to remain authentically Alana, and the projects that I take on are continuations of my career journey.

“I can adapt to the demands of a project and still be the best version of myself. I remain steadfast in my goals while producing every show, documentary or collaboration. As a result of working on many projects, there’s always new information and experiences. It keeps me well-rounded.”

The New York Film Academy congratulates Alana Blaylock on her career and looks forward to her future successes sure to come!
