Digital motion graphics is everywhere and is frequently used in the world of film, television and commercials. You’ve seen it a million times – a compelling title sequence at the beginning of a movie or during the end credits, or even beautifully animated text flying across the screen to sell a product. Sometimes animated text is used to polish a project–other times it is the project. Animated text combined with music, images or voiceover communicates powerful messages to captivated audiences.
The New York Film Academy’s After Effects: Animation & Title Design four-week intensive workshop provides students instruction in Adobe After Effects so they may learn to create animated titles and title sequences. Additionally, they are taught basic video compositing skills and how to work with green screen footage. Our motion graphics instructors are experienced industry professionals currently working in the fields of motion graphics, 2D animation and visual effects.
Adobe After Effects is the industry standard for many kinds of visual effects. After Effects provides a comprehensive set of 2D and 3D tools for compositing, animation, and effects that motion-graphics professionals, visual effects artists, web designers, and film and video productions need. After Effects is widely used for digital post-production of film, video, and web content.
Course Content
The New York Film Academy believes in a hands-on approach that allows students to gain experience in After Effects, while training them as storytellers as well. We find that the best approach to students gaining experience is for them to create and work on their own projects. During the course students will finish four projects that become more challenging as the course progresses.
Workshop Objectives
Students gain an in-depth understanding of Adobe After Effects and are introduced to Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Additionally, they are taught basic graphic design principles. The emphasis of the class is mainly on text illustration, yet students also learn other skills. Students are also taught video compositing and working with green screen footage.
By the completion of this course, students create four different projects. Each project demonstrates the student's’ understanding of the theoretical and technical skills taught in class.
This is the core class of the Digital Video Editing Workshop. In daily meetings, students are instructed on the latest version of Avid Media Composer. Critical skills such as starting a project, making cuts, post-production workflow, sound design, media management, basic effects and other advanced skills are taught.
Editing Theory
In Theory class, students explore picture editing and sound editing conventions and techniques. The instructor presents relevant movie scenes to the topic of class in order to facilitate discussion. Students analyze such things as mood, rhythm, coverage conventions, continuity, and film grammar.
After Effects/Photoshop
During the last week of the course the students learn the basic tools of Adobe After-Effects and Photoshop. Filmmakers will encounter these two popular programs multiple times in their careers.
DaVinci Resolve
Students are given an introduction to the color correction capabilities of this robust and groundbreaking color correction software.
