15-Week Online Rewrite Screenplay Workshop

Learn Screenplay Editing at NYFA

In our Online 15-Week Screenplay Rewrite Workshop, students learn the tools of revising and rewriting a screenplay. Throughout the workshop, students collect notes on a completed screenplay, from their instructor as well as their peers, which they incorporate during the editing process.

Screenplay rewriting is itself an art, and at the end of the class, students have a completed rewrite of their script. To attend this workshop, students must have completed our 15-Week Online Screenplay Workshop or submit a finished, full-length, properly formatted feature film screenplay with their application.

Workshop DescriptionWorkshop Name: 15-Week Online Screenplay Rewrite Workshop Overview

Prerequisite: 15-Week Online Screenplay Workshop (or submission of full-length screenplay)

During this online workshop, students revise a full-length screenplay, which may be a piece they’ve written before their time at NYFA or one written in our 15-Week Online Screenplay Workshop. They will use that completed script as their primary project throughout this workshop.

In the first few weeks of this workshop, students study the fundamentals of screenplay revision, answering questions such as: How do you take notes? How do you look for the intent behind a note? How do you deal with a note that you disagree with? How do you edit a screenplay, in collaboration and independently? How do you work with producers, directors and development execs?

While building this fundamental knowledge, students build a rewrite blueprint, or a plan to address the notes in a collaborative manner while still maintaining their own artistic vision. Students spend the rest of the class rewriting their script, adjusting their blueprint as they go to reflect the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

The online class is conducted over live video, with written lessons and assignments posted for critique. Students meet via Zoom, however, if time restrictions impact attendance, students can catch up via recordings of the class. Additional video lessons are posted online through our course Portals and may be viewed according to a student’s personal schedule. The class interacts on an electronic course Portal. Students are also welcomed to communicate with each other and the instructor digitally, in class and in between sessions. Instructors are available electronically for support.

Outside coursework will vary in time based on the student’s writing speed but on average, takes 1-4 hours per week. This class is separate from the 15-Week Online Television Rewrite Workshop but depending on enrollment, may occasionally be combined with that group to give students a full and robust workshop environment.
