Each workshop condenses extensive instruction and projects in a short period of time so that students receive the Academy’s world-class education in the time period that is best suited for them.

Whether a student chooses to spend a week or twelve studying acting for film in the Academy’s state-of-the-art facilities, he or she can expect an intensive experience that will properly prepare students to act in front of a camera. Students study under our renowned faculty of professional actors who impart their own real world experience on top of immersing students in the fundamentals of acting. In short, the Academy’s acting workshops provide an incomparable opportunity to learn the intricacies of acting for film.

Eight-Week Acting Workshop Overview

Over the course of eight weeks, students enrolled in this workshop study and practice the craft of acting for film full-time. Students will study on campus Monday through Friday in addition to having the choice to use their weekends to work on their class assignments.

The primary focus of the workshop is to guide students in making the leap from acting on stage to acting in front of a camera, where actors have to contend with far more distractions and demands than required by the theatre. Students study under our faculty of professional actors who provide professional insight into how students can realize their professional ambitions once the workshop is over.

In addition, students will gain invaluable experience in front of the camera by performing in original short films that are made in collaboration with the Academy’s film school students. Following the Academy’s philosophy of learning by doing, students learn how to act in front of a camera by gaining experience actually acting for the camera, both through in-class exercises and performing in student films.

Four-Week Acting Workshop Overview

The Four-Week Acting for Film Workshop allows students to participate in a short training program that demands full immersion into learning the craft. Students who find the training beneficial are encouraged to join the second half of the Eight-Week Workshop, intensifying their studies and gaining more experience in front of the camera. Many of our Four-Week students have gone on to enroll in our popular One-Year Acting for Film Program. In select locations a special three-Week session is also available.

Designed to help students develop the skills necessary for acting in front of a camera and on set, students also receive a thorough education in the fundamentals of acting. Classes cover such topics as the elements of acting, scene study, monologues, improvisation, and audition techniques to help students obtain a solid foundation in the craft of acting. One-Week Acting Workshop Overview

The pace of this one-week course is demanding and students should be prepared to live, eat and breathe acting for the entire duration of the course. Students should also be prepared to work in non-traditional acting classes emphasizing the construction and control of character given the unique pressures of a film or television shoot. Film or video cameras may be used during particular classes.

Although the workshop requires no prior experience, it is a perfect introduction for aspiring actors looking to gain experience acting in front of the camera. It is also perfect for beginners who wish to obtain a working understanding of the fundamentals of acting. Over the course of five days, students are immersed in the “how’s and why’s” of acting for film in addition to our faculty of professional actors introducing students to the following topics through class exercises:
  • Relaxation - How to release tensions that get in the way of acting.
  • Method - How to act truthfully moment-to-moment.
  • Scene Study - How to identify the dramatic beats of the scene and needs of the characters.
  • Movement - How character and action can be expressed without words.
  • Voice - How to use voice to reveal character.
  • Acting For Camera - How to work in front of the lens, hit marks, use eyelines, and create fresh performances for every take.
This one-week course gives students an understanding of the rigorous requirements of the film actor. Many of our one-week students get "bitten by the acting bug" during our programs. They realize that one week will not fulfill their desire to learn all they can about the craft of acting and therefore return to complete a longer course of study.

All students enrolling in the Intensive One-Week Acting for Film Workshop should be aware that this is an introductory course. The limitations of a one-week course should be apparent, given that many people spend years studying and perfecting their craft.

Twelve-Week Evening Acting Workshop Overview

The Evening Workshop gives students the instruction they need while allowing them to work during the day through the work week. All classes are geared towards providing the building blocks needed to act for film.

The curriculum emphasizes the theory and practice of the basic elements of the acting craft, using acting for film and television and scene work as starting points. In addition to scene work, students participate in classes aimed specifically at training the actor for the requirements of acting on a film set.

Classes encourage students to break down physical and internal inhibitions, and help each student find the most effective personal sources for the creation of truthful characters. Students should be prepared to work in non-traditional acting classes that emphasize the construction and control of character given the unique pressures of a film or television shoot. Video cameras may be used during classes.

Throughout the Evening Workshop, students meet with instructors for one-on-one consultation. Upon the successful completion of the course, students take home a master tape of all their projects and receive a New York Film Academy diploma.

Students who have completed our Twelve-Week Evening Acting for film program may continue their studies with us in an advanced program. They may also apply to our One-Year Acting Program. Please contact us for more information.

Special Holiday Acting Workshop Overview

In acknowledgment of the importance of the film actor’s job, and in support of the skills required to do the job brilliantly, the New York Film Academy is proud to offer its Special Holiday Acting for Film Workshop.

The workshop is comprised of two three-week portions with a two-week break. The first three weeks concentrate on the foundations of acting, using training techniques rooted in the theater but applicable to screen acting. Students participate in a broad array of core classes that introduce them to finding the actor within, while simultaneously training their instrument to do the kind of technical, emotional, and physical work necessary for film acting.

In the second portion the core classes continue as the students’ focus intensifies on applying the techniques they have learned to more elaborate scene work, on-camera exercises, and film shoots—all designed to develop and hone their screen-acting ability. At several points in both portions, each student performs in video shoots. In addition, a variety of classes are given in order to broaden students’ knowledge of acting techniques, the film business, and many different film crafts. The Holiday Acting for Film Workshop attracts students from all over the world with backgrounds and experiences that are as varied as the countries from which they originate. Each class is limited to an average of twelve students. The compressed length of the course and the focused level of study requires commitment and intensive collaboration. The experience is physically and emotionally demanding, but always rewarding. Graduates of the Holiday Workshop oftentimes choose to continue their intensive studies by enrolling in our popular One-Year Acting for Film Program.
