15-Week Online Writing for TV Spec Workshop

Learn How To Write a Spec Script at NYFA

In the television industry, a spec script is a script of an existing series, written to demonstrate the writer’s ability to master the style, format and voice of a show they did not create. In this 15-Week Online Television Spec Workshop, students learn how to write a spec script by studying half-hour and hour-long television series currently on the air, while learning the basics of television structure and format. They will then develop an episode idea and write a spec episode.

This course is offered during our Summer start.

Students meet once per week – on Tuesdays at 5pm Pacific Time/8 pm Eastern Time – for 3 hours in two 1.5-hour sessions with a 30-minute break.

Workshop DescriptionWorkshop Name: 15-Week Online Television Spec Workshop

During this online workshop, students learn how to develop ideas for an existing TV series, and how to examine and analyze the structure and story engine for shows already on the air. Once they pick a series, students develop an episode idea, break it down to fit the structure of the series, and then write a spec episode.

15-Week Online Television Pilot Workshop

Learn How To Create a TV Series at NYFA

Creating a television series requires more than just a script; it requires creating a web of characters, a fully-realized world, a sustainable story engine and a specific voice for your series. In the 15-Week Online Television Pilot Workshop, students already familiar with television format and structure will learn how to write a television pilot.

To attend, students must have completed our 15-Week Online Television Spec Workshop or submit a formatted TV script with their application.

This course is offered during our Fall start.

Students meet once per week on Tuesdays at 5pm Pacific Time/8 pm Eastern Time for 3 hours in two 1.5-hour sessions with a 30-minute break.

Workshop DescriptionWorkshop Name: 15-Week Online Television Pilot Workshop

Prerequisite: 15-Week Online Television Spec Workshop (or submission of a TV spec script they have written)

During our 15-Week Online Television Pilot Workshop, students come up with ideas for possible TV series. Working with their instructor and class, they will pick one to develop and create a series proposal that details the world, characters and themes of their series. They will then break down the story of the pilot before writing a TV script for that pilot.

After completing this workshop, many students apply for our 15-Week Online Screenplay Rewrite Workshop, where they learn how to revise and polish the first draft of their pilot script.

15-Week Online Television Rewrite Workshop

15-Week Online Television Rewrite Workshop

Develop and Revise a Spec Script at NYFA

Television series are not developed in a vacuum. Writers work with studios, producers or networks to develop a series together. And central to this process is television script revising — the ability to rewrite and reconceive a series and its pilot.

In this 15-Week Online Television Rewrite Workshop, students learn the basic tools of rewriting a TV pilot teleplay, such as taking notes, finding their original intent and working with producers, directors and development execs. To attend, students must have completed our 15-Week Online Television Pilot Workshop or submit a complete, properly formatted television pilot script and series proposal.

Workshop DescriptionWorkshop Name: 15-Week Online Television Rewrite Workshop

Prerequisite: 15-Week Online Television Pilot Workshop (or submission of a complete, properly formatted television pilot script and series proposal.)

In this workshop, students start with a completed teleplay for an original pilot and a proposal for that series — such as the one written in our online Television Pilot Workshop. Notes and suggestions from the instructor and class will be combined with notes received previously on this project and planned changes to build a new version of the series proposal and a rewrite blueprint for the pilot script.

Once a plan for the rewrite is created, students rewrite the pilot script, adjusting their blueprint and proposal as they go to reflect the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

At the end of the class, students will have completed a rewrite of their script and have a new version of the series proposal. To learn more about NYFA’s screenwriting workshops, see NYFA’s Course Catalog or request more information.

15-Week Online Screenplay & Television Rewrite Workshop

15-Week Online Screenplay & Television Rewrite Workshop

Rewrite Your Screenplay or Pilot at NYFA

In our Online 15-Week Screenplay & Television Rewrite Workshop, students learn the tools of revising and rewriting either a screenplay or television pilot teleplay and series proposal. Throughout this immersive online screenwriting workshop, students collect notes from their instructor as well as their peers, which they incorporate during the editing process.

Rewriting is itself an art, and at the end of the class, students will have a completed rewrite of their script or a rewrite of the TV pilot and series proposal. To attend this workshop, students must have completed our 15-Week Online Screenplay Workshop (or submit a finished, full-length, properly formatted feature film screenplay); or 15-Week Online Television Pilot Workshop (or submit a complete, properly formatted television pilot script and series proposal).

This course is offered during our Fall start.

Students meet once per week – on Tuesdays at 5pm Pacific Time/8 pm Eastern Time – for 3 hours in two 1.5-hour sessions with a 30-minute break.

Workshop DescriptionWorkshop Name: 15-Week Online Screenplay & Television Rewrite Workshop

Prerequisite: 15-Week Online Screenplay Workshop (or submission of full-length screenplay); OR 15-Week Online Television Pilot Workshop (or submission of a complete, properly formatted television pilot script and series proposal).

During this online workshop, students revise either a full-length screenplay (which may be a piece they’ve written before their time at NYFA or one written in our 15-Week Online Screenplay Workshop) or a full-length television pilot script and series proposal (which may be a piece they’re written before their time as NYFA or one written in our 15-Week Online Television Pilot Workshop). They will use that completed work as their primary project throughout this workshop.

In the first few weeks of this workshop, students study the fundamentals of revision, answering questions such as: How do you take notes? How do you look for the intent behind a note? How do you deal with a note that you disagree with? How do you edit a screenplay in collaboration and independently? How do you work with producers, directors, and development execs?

While building this fundamental knowledge, students build a rewrite blueprint or a plan to address the notes in a collaborative manner while still maintaining their own artistic vision. Students spend the rest of the class rewriting their projects, adjusting their blueprint as they go to reflect the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

The online class is conducted over live video, with written lessons and assignments posted for critique. Students meet via Zoom, however, if time restrictions impact attendance, students can catch up via recordings of the class. Additional video lessons are posted online through our course Portals and may be viewed according to a student’s personal schedule. The class interacts on an electronic course Portal. Students are also welcome to communicate with each other and the instructor digitally, in class, and in between sessions. Instructors are available electronically for support.

Outside coursework will vary in time based on the student’s writing speed but, on average, takes 1-4 hours per week.

15-Week Online Writing For Comic Books Workshop

15-Weel Online Writing For Comic Books Workshop

Learn How To Write a Comic Book at NYFA

Since the earliest cave drawings, people have told stories through sequential art. Comic books are the latest incarnation of this art form — and are hugely popular in Japan (as manga), in Korea (as manhwa), in Europe, and in the Americas. Now more than ever, comic books and comic book writing hold a significant place in entertainment, film, and culture. The relationship between a panel in a comic book and a shot in a film is self-evident, and through transmedia, the two storytelling mediums are more and more interlocked.

In this 15-Week Online Writing For Comic Books Workshop, individuals with a passion for comic books and storytelling can learn the basics of comic book writing, both in plotting and writing a comic book script, as well the different types of script formats.

This course is offered during our Spring start.

Students meet once per week – on Tuesdays at 5pm Pacific Time/8 pm Eastern Time – for 3 hours in two 1.5-hour sessions with a 30-minute break.

Workshop DescriptionWorkshop Name: 15-Week Online Writing For Comic Books Workshop

During this online workshop, students can learn how to write a comic book and explore related topics including the different types of script formats, proposals for submission to editors, the different forms for the medium (from manga to comic books to graphic novels to webcomics), as well as the proper use of dialogue and sound effects. Many students complete this workshop with a proposal for a graphic novel, manga or comic book series, and the script for the first issue or chapter of that project.

15-Week Part-Time Online Cinematography Workshop

15-Week Part-Time Online Cinematography Workshop

Learn Cinematography from Anywhere

The 15-Week Part-Time Online Cinematography Workshop is focused on understanding the basic principles of cinematography with a combination of online lectures, analysis of the history of cinematography, camera and basic lighting technology and techniques, including an introduction to editing and color correction using Davinci Resolve.

The workshop follows the same curriculum as the 4-week workshops but is spread over fifteen weeks. The program is designed to meet the needs of students who have other commitments during the day.

Program DescriptionProgram Name: 15-Week Part-Time Online Cinematography Workshop

Students will test what they learn during the online lectures with 3 exercises that are designed using a digital camera of their own possession, including a cell phone if nothing else is available.

Projects/Exercises

  • Composition: As directed during the Production Lab prep class, the students will create a series of shots to practice and test their knowledge of composition and the technical elements of cinematography (focus, exposure, color, basic camera movements).
  • Continuity: The student will create a small scene within the space safely accessible to them, in which they will use different framing, angles of view, and available or artificial light to build the narrative. Could be fictional (ex: a mystery presence in the room) or documentary (ex: a family member/partner baking a cake
  • Montage: For their final film, the students will pick an abstract concept (e.g.: fear, excitement, love, solitude, etc.) and, within their safe space, film images that will describe it visually either on their own or combined with others. The project focuses less on the narrative aspect of filmmaking and more on the capacity of cinematography to deliver a subtext of significance to otherwise unrelated images.

Prerequisites – This is an introductory workshop, no prerequisites are required, nor is any prior experience expected.

To learn more, request more information.
