NYFA’s 15-Week online Musical Theatre Workshop introduces students to the integral skills required for success in the musical theatre field, and prepares them for the various demands of professional musical theatre. Designed for individuals with singing and movement abilities, this class is a good fit for performers and aspiring performers. Beginners will learn foundational audition and performance skills and more advanced students will have the opportunity to refine their craft. Upon completion, students will have gained invaluable knowledge and experience in the art  and craft of musical theatre through the convenience of an online platform. As this program is offered part-time, classes will be held in the evenings, and can be easily balanced with responsibilities during the day.

 

Workshop DescriptionWorkshop Name: 15-Week Online Musical Theatre Workshop

In the 15-Week Evening Musical Theatre Workshop, students will learn the essentials of performance, voice, movement, and auditioning. Throughout the workshop, students learn directly from industry professionals and experts, taking classes in Acting, Performance Lab, Ballet, Jazz/Theatre Dance, History of Musical Theatre, Voice Studio Lab, Audition Technique, and Basic Music Theory. 

Prerequisites – This is an introductory workshop, no prerequisites are required, nor is any prior experience expected. 

Weekly one-on-one voice classes are also available for an additional cost to complement this course. To learn more, request more information.

CLASS DETAILS

Acting 

The class begins with foundational exercises to train the actor’s reflexes toward behavioral truth within imaginary circumstances. Once this foundation has been established, the students can apply themselves to scripted text. 

Performance Lab 

This is a performance-based class that approaches musical theatre the same way an actor explores text in a play. During the course, each student will develop necessary skills to thoughtfully investigate material in order to combine organic choices in movement, acting and singing. Students will explore the fundamentals of text analysis and research in order to provide intentions, stakes and conflict for each character in a variety of contrasting musical theatre genres. 

Ballet 

This class provides a highly disciplined and developmentally appropriate sequence of ballet training. In class training focuses upon building strength, flexibility, musicality, and coordination. The class will cover the basics of placement/alignment, turnout, lines of positions, port de bras, quality of movement, class etiquette, ballet terminology. 

Jazz/Theatre Dance 

This class is designed to teach each student the correct alignment and specific techniques necessary for advancement within this and all dance genres. Class is aimed at increasing strength, flexibility, endurance, and the ability to learn and retain choreography. 

Voice Studio Lab 

This course provides an introduction to the basic functional skills of vocal production and singing. Topics include: breathing, muscular and air support, diction, the vocal anatomy, tone production, vowel and consonant modification, resonance and vocal health. 

History of Musical Theatre 

This course provides students with an overview of early and modern theatre; including composers, lyricists, performers, directors, choreographers, and producers. 

Audition Technique 

The study of musical and non-musical based audition techniques. This class includes a unit of work focused on professional preparation and the business of acting covering topics related to casting, audition prep, headshots and resumes, personal style, awareness of type, and current trends in the profession.

Basic Music Theory 

This class teaches students literacy in the written language of music. Actors who have the ability to read music fluently have a much easier time learning songs and can do so without the help of a coach or musical director. Sight singing is the ability to sing what is notated at a glance, and requires the ability to identify intervals immediately and sing them correctly, and on time.

This 15-Week Workshop will meet as a class with a live instructor Tuesdays and Thursdays with an additional class on Wednesdays for weeks 14 and 15.

Scheduled classes are as follows:

  • One 2.5 hour class on each meeting day, as indicated above
  • 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. Eastern Time / 4:00 – 6:30 p.m., Pacific Time

CLASS DETAILS

Acting

This course introduces students to training techniques useful for all mediums but particularly aimed at acting in the Musical Theatre genre. The course begins with foundational exercises to train students’ reflexes toward behavioral truth within imaginary circumstances. Once this foundation has been established, students begin to apply themselves to scripted text. 

Performance Lab

This is a performance-based course that approaches musical theatre the same way an actor explores text in a play. Voice and Speech

In this course, students are introduced to the basic elements of preparing the body for authentic phonation, breath support, auditory sensory awareness, and the freeing of the natural voice. Students study the effective production of pure vowels and diphthongs, consonant action, and the interplay of the spoken word within imaginary circumstances. 

Ballet

This course provides a highly disciplined and developmentally appropriate sequence of ballet training. In-class training focuses on building strength, flexibility, musicality, and coordination. This course is the study of musical-based audition techniques. In-class work is focused on professional preparation and the business of acting covering topics related to casting, audition prep, headshots and resumes, personal style, awareness of type, and current trends in the profession. 

Improvisation

Students explore the fundamental principles of improvisation and how it enhances and applies to all of their performance work. Working in pairs and groups, students create improvised scenes and environments, explore character, learn to trust instincts, and practice making honest, fully committed choices.

TIMES AND BREAKDOWN BY WEEK

This is an intensive, full-time Monday through Saturday workshop that typically runs anytime between 9 AM-10 PM. There are breaks in between sessions. Students will need to anticipate extra time outside of class to complete assignments, projects, and exercises. Daily class times may vary. Due to instructor availability, space availability, and need, we may have to run classes on Saturdays and in the evening. We try not to schedule students for more than 6 hours of class daily. Learn How to Use Avid Media Composer at NYFA

A strong editor knows how to piece together a compelling, engaging story. In NYFA’s full-time, 4-Week Digital Editing workshop in NYC and Los Angeles, students learn the art of storytelling for film, television, and media and become proficient in editing with Avid Media Composer.

Workshop DescriptionWorkshop Name: 4-Week Avid Digital Editing Workshop

During this hands-on workshop, students gain an introduction to editing for filmmaking, media, entertainment, and more. It is a full-time, intensive workshop that meets during the day, designed for students from various professional, personal, and educational backgrounds. The workshop is a great fit for students or professionals contemplating a longer-term education in editing or industry career.

The workshop curriculum balances projects and coursework, teaching students to edit with Media Composer while they learn the theoretical and technical approaches to editing. Students rapidly learn essential skills in making cuts, post-production workflow, sound design, media management, and basic effects through this hands-on approach.

Each day consists of approximately two to three classes, including supervised lab time. Lab time is part of the schedule and allows the students to practice their editing skills under the guidance of our expert faculty.

Digital Editing Theory and Practice

This course presents students with multiple aesthetic approaches to editing film and video. Students will learn how to apply concepts such as temporal continuity and spatial continuity, as well as less traditional discontinuous editing techniques to their work. The course will also discuss the psychological and emotional effects of editing on the overall story. Additionally, students will learn to operate Avid Media Composer editing software. Advanced technical elements including sound design, color correction, and working with multiple media types will be investigated in depth. Classes are supplemented with individual consultations at the computer.

Learn How to Use Adobe After Effects at NYFA

NYFA’s 4-Week Adobe After Effects Workshop provides students instruction in this industry-standard film editing software, teaching them how to create animated titles and title sequences, as well as basic video compositing skills. By the end of the program, students learn how to combine animated text with music, images, or voiceover to communicate powerful messages and captivate audiences.

Workshop DescriptionWorkshop Name: 4-Week Adobe After Effects Workshop

In this intensive workshop, students gain hands-on experience in After Effects, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator while training them to become effective visual storytellers. The emphasis of the class is mainly on text illustration, and students are also taught video compositing and working with green screen footage, as well as basic graphic design principles.

CLASS DETAILS

Orientation

This introductory course is designed to help students navigate the campus, including the edit lab, and understand program flow and expectations.

After Effects

This is the foundational course of the program. Students are given in-depth hands-on instruction in Adobe After Effects. They build their skillset and knowledge through lectures and creating four projects. Each week of class is centered on the project to be screened at the end of the week or the beginning of the following week. 

Theory

This course is designed to support the technical classes of the workshop. Students learn about design elements such as shape and typography. Additionally, they learn things such as mood, rhythm, and storyboarding. 

Screen & Critique 

In this course, students screen their work for instructor and classmate feedback upon completion of each film assignment. Constructive criticism is based on the student’s application of technical and aesthetic principles learned during workshop/lecture hours, and on how well those techniques were used to achieve the student’s goal. 

Photoshop Tools

In this course, students learn the major functions of Adobe Photoshop – an image, text, and photo manipulation software. Students integrate their knowledge of Photoshop into After Effects.

Hands-on Filmmaking Workshop at NYFA

In NYFA’s 3-Week Filmmaking Workshop, students get a thorough introduction to film. Similar to all NYFA film programs, each student writes, directs, shoots, and edits two short film projects.

Workshop DescriptionWorkshop Name: 3-Week Filmmaking Workshop

NYFA’s hands-on filmmaking workshop is designed to teach the essentials of directing and film production. During the program, students learn from industry professionals, using film equipment and technology provided by NYFA. Throughout the workshop, students learn the basics of writing, directing, location scouting, casting, shooting, and editing films, making it possible for them to complete their own film projects during the course.

As in all NYFA film workshops, students create a series of their own short films, which they screen and get critique from their instructor and peers. They each direct their own films, and crew on the short films of their peers, rotating amongst key crew positions and gaining crucial experience in various on-set production roles. By the end of NYFA’s program, students have a body of work, actual set experience, as well as a certificate of completion. Many graduates of the course choose to continue their film studies in more advanced programs.

CLASS DETAILS

Directing
At the core of the Four Week Program, this Area of Study introduces students to all major aspects of filmmaking. Students will learn concepts to help achieve maximum psychological impact by studying the director’s decisions in camera placement, blocking, staging, and visual image design. Students will be challenged to think comprehensively about their film projects in terms of the economic realities of low-budget student production. Using their own film projects as prototypes, students will learn to break down their film scripts in terms of story and emotional beats, shot selection and composition, and budgeting and scheduling. This Area of Study will be the forum for preparing, screening, and critiquing three short films.

Screenwriting
This Area of Study introduces the established tools and language used in writing a film project. Students will take a story from the initial idea to script with an emphasis on the fundamentals of visual storytelling. The intersection of story structure, theme, character, tension, and conflict is examined through detailed scene analysis. The in-class discussion provides students with constructive analysis and support. Students are encouraged to tell their stories visually, rather than relying on dialogue.

Cinematography
Students undergo intensive training in the use of HD digital video cameras and their accessories. Through hands-on workshops and film tests, they will also learn fundamental lighting techniques. As they progress through the workshop, they learn how to support the mood of the story with lighting choices and  experiment with expressive lighting styles. 

Editing
This Area of Study presents students with multiple aesthetic approaches to editing film and video. Students will learn how to apply concepts such as temporal continuity and spatial continuity, as well as less traditional discontinuous editing techniques to their work. The Area of Study will also discuss the psychological and emotional effects of editing on the overall story. Additionally, students will learn to operate digital editing software which they will use to edit their own films. Classes are supplemented with individual consultations at the computer. 

Production Workshop
Filming a neutral dialogue scene with the class as assigned crew and instructor supervision, this scene should be complete with subtext, backstory, conflict, objectives, beats, actions, and be contained within one location. In these workshops, students act for each other to learn how to be in front of the camera.

Learn How to Make 3D Animation & VFX at NYFA

In NYFA’s 3-Week 3D Animation & VFX Workshop, students learn the major concepts of animation using the Oscar-winning software Maya — the industry-standard 3D computer program. Throughout their three weeks, students progress through basic modeling, motion and rendering exercises en route to the completion of a short 3D computer animated film of their own design. 

No prior experience is required to enroll in the 3-Week 3D Animation & VFX Workshop, but the pace is intense and students should be prepared to fully immerse themselves in the world of 3D animation for the duration of their studies.

The bulk of students’ time outside of class is spent in supervised labs. Lab time is used to complete and to expand upon assignments, as well as to create content for final animated films. Students will be challenged to think comprehensively about their film projects in terms of aesthetic fundamentals such as visual storytelling, character design/development, acting and expression, and art direction. Animation Software Tools
Students undergo intensive training in the use of both 3-D and 2-D software. Through hands-on workshops and lectures, they will also learn fundamental digital modeling, animation, texturing and lighting techniques. As they progress through the program, they learn how to support the mood of the story with lighting choices and they experiment with expressive lighting and color palette styles.

Students will learn how to apply concepts such as temporal continuity and spatial continuity, as well as less traditional discontinuous editing techniques to their work. The Area of Study will also discuss the psychological and emotional effects of editing on the overall story.
