The one-week intensive acting program is designed to serve the needs of different types of students. Students focus on acting for film and scene study, with additional time spent with voice and movement, as well as improvisation and the business of acting. Students also learn cold reading techniques. Students who wish to continue their studies can apply credit towards and transfer to an extended acting program.

CLASS DETAILS

Acting For Film

In Acting for Film students learn the basics of film acting: calibrating performances based on shot size and angle, eye line, hitting marks, emotional and physical continuity, and strength and imagination in acting choices. Students are assigned scenes from produced screenplays, which are then shot with instructor supervision. In addition, students may learn to perform a number of film crew positions to broaden their knowledge of the duties of everyone on a professional film set.

Scene Study

This course builds a foundation for acting through the study of the execution of a written scene. By working on sections of published plays and screenplays, students learn the basic concepts of scene study: defining objectives, breaking the scene down into beats, understanding the arc, pursuing the objective, playing actions, and working to overcome obstacles. Students first begin with silent scenes and/or short dialogue scenes before longer dramatic or comedic scenes are explored. 

Acting Technique

Students are introduced to tools necessary to hone and focus their acting skills. Students will work on exercises helping them to imaginatively personalize the given circumstances, and learn concepts that lead to moment-to-moment behavior in their work. 

Voice and Movement

In this course, students gain insight into the power of how to nurture and control their voices by exercising various resonators and muscles enabling them to release emotional impulses. In addition to breath work, this course focuses on relaxation and posture to nurture the actor’s instrument. 

Text Analysis

This course introduces the core skills necessary to analyze and break down scripts. Students will work with text, applying key concepts discussed.

Monologues

Students will work on an assigned monologue, applying text and character analysis learned thus far. Students are introduced to strategies that make a successful monologue. 

Special Topics

Special Topics offers students the opportunity to explore key acting topics in an in-depth lecture/workshop format. Topics covered relate to the craft and/or industry and give students current insights to apply to a career or further studies. Classes that may be offered include Acting Technique, Scene Study, Voice and Movement, and Monologues.

Build Essential Acting Skills at NYFA

Acting for film and Scene Study are the two principal areas of concentration in the intensive One-Week Acting for Film Workshop. These areas coincide in creating short, filmed scenes in which students act. Voice and Speech, Movement, and Film Craft serve as support courses, while Audition Technique exposes students to cold reading techniques. Students are also introduced to the business of acting and its essential tools.    

The basis of this and all other New York Film Academy programs is learning by doing, using a hands-on, practical, experiential approach. This workshop is constructed to deliver a great deal of content in a short time and is an exceptional opportunity for a total immersion experience for one week.

Program Description Program Name: 1-Week Online Acting

The educational objectives in the One-Week Acting for Film Workshop include: 

  • Discuss the set requirements of a film actor. 
  • Look at the arc of a scene and its textual requirements of the actor. 
  • Modulate a performance to fit the framing of shots. 
  • Connect the body and voice to scripted material. 
  • Increase flexibility through body awareness.  
  • Recognize the essential choices needed for effective execution of cold readings.
  • Examine the role of the film director with an emphasis on how this role affects the choices an actor makes in performance.

Acting For Film

Acting Technique and Scene Study

Acting is as much of a business as it is a craft. In addition to training, successful actors must develop strong marketing skills to build a career. This course focuses on such topics as feeling comfortable at cold readings and preparing audition materials.   

Film Craft 

In this course, students learn the basics of directing to increase the actor’s ability to collaborate with filmmakers in developing dynamic performances.

In NYFA’s 1-Week Photography Workshop in Florence, Italy, students will experiment and explore several genres of photography, developing their unique style and building their portfolio.

Throughout their week at NYFA Florence, students will be introduced to the people, traditions, and customs of Italy, allowing the architecture and landscapes to shape and refine their work. Due to the intensive nature of the workshop, students quickly learn the essentials of photography through hands-on experience in the field and rigorous coursework. No prior experience is required to attend.

At NYFA Florence, aspiring photographers will develop the skills necessary to compose, and capture digital photographic projects. Day One: Understanding your camera, Lightroom basics, photo walk to the Ponte Vecchio and Oltrarno

Day Two: Street and portrait photography; photo walk to Cappelle Medicee for street portraits, Image editing in Lightroom

CLASS DETAILS

Performance Lab

This is a performance-based course that approaches musical theatre the same way an actor explores text in a play. During the course, students develop the necessary skills to thoughtfully investigate material in order to combine organic choices in movement, acting and singing. Students explore the fundamentals of text analysis and research in order to provide intentions, stakes, and conflict for each character in a variety of contrasting musical theater genres. 

Voice Studio Lab

This course provides an introduction to the basic functional skills of vocal production and singing. Topics include breathing, muscular and air support, diction, vocal anatomy, tone production, vowel and consonant modification, resonance, and vocal health. 

Jazz/Theatre Dance

This course is designed to teach each student the correct alignment and specific techniques necessary for advancement within this and all dance genres. In-class training aims to increase strength, flexibility, endurance, and student’s ability to learn and retain choreography.

Audition Technique

The study of musical theatre-based audition techniques. Included in the class will be a unit of work focused on professional preparation and the business of acting covering topics related to casting, audition prep, headshots and resumes, personal style, awareness of type, and current trends in the profession. 

Private Voice Diagnostic

This course offers each student two one-on-one sessions with a private voice teacher. The work is designed to help students to know the range, capacity, and general health of their vocal instrument. In addition, these private voice sessions can be used as a guide to discovering the best, most effective song selections.

This is an intensive, full-time Monday through Saturday workshop that typically runs anytime between 9 AM-10 PM. There are breaks in between sessions. Students will need to anticipate extra time outside of class to complete assignments, projects, and exercises. Daily class times may vary. Due to instructor availability, space availability, and need, we may have to run classes in the evening. We try not to schedule students for more than 6 hours of class daily. This course requires a three ring binder, proper dance shoes, proper dance attire, and a phone or other suitable recording device. 

Audition Requirements

To audition for a workshop, prospective students must submit an application online, as well as a virtual audition that consists of performing one musical theatre song. The 1-Week Visual Effects Workshop is an intensive hands-on exploration of Adobe After Effects, a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application. This workshop, held at our NYFA Florence campus, introduces students to the tools and skills necessary to create impressive visual effects and digital image manipulation. No prior experience is required to attend.

Workshop DescriptionWorkshop Name: 1-Week Visual Effects Workshop

In this hands-on workshop, students complete a series of specific projects, with plenty of room for exploration and experimentation. Central to NYFA’s philosophy of learning by doing, students learn the craft of visual effects through hands-on instruction and continuous practical exercises. Every day of the workshop, students can expect to be actively creating, manipulating, editing, and assessing VFX imagery. Students expand their repertoire of fundamental and advanced techniques, including keying, tracking, compositing, and animation. The program is constructed to deliver a great deal of content in just one week, and students cover topics such as:

  • COMPOSITING
    Understanding compositing fundamentals opens the door to your creativity. In this 1-Week workshop, you will learn how to combine visual elements from separate sources into single images, creating the illusion that these elements are part of the same scene.
  • 2.5D ANIMATION
    Learn the process, 2.5D animation used to make images or scenes that simulate the appearance of being three-dimensional. Students will bring still images to life by creating a false perspective and also learn how to animate cameras for creating distance parallax.
  • VISUAL EFFECTS
    Students will learn the key components of creating incredible visual effects such as camera tracking, particle systems, image masking, and more to create common cinematic effects including fire, explosions, set extensions, fog, rain, and snow, as well learn how to use color correction, look up tables, use green screen footage, animation effects, digital distortion, screen and monitor image replacement, create planets and space imagery, energy portals, and even the ability to turn people into dust clouds!

At the core of the Four Week Program, this Area of Study introduces students to all major aspects of filmmaking. Students will learn concepts to help achieve maximum psychological impact by studying the director’s decisions in camera placement, blocking, staging, and visual image design. Students will be challenged to think comprehensively about their film projects in terms of the economic realities of low-budget student production. Using their own film projects as prototypes, students will learn to break down their film scripts in terms of story and emotional beats, shot selection and composition, and budgeting and scheduling. This Area of Study will be the forum for preparing, screening, and critiquing three short films.

Screenwriting
This Area of Study introduces the established tools and language used in writing a film project. Students will take a story from the initial idea to script with an emphasis on the fundamentals of visual storytelling. The intersection of story structure, theme, character, tension, and conflict is examined through detailed scene analysis. The in-class discussion provides students with constructive analysis and support. Students are encouraged to tell their stories visually, rather than relying on dialogue.

Cinematography
Students undergo intensive training in the use of HD digital video cameras and their accessories. Through hands-on workshops and film tests, they will also learn fundamental lighting techniques. As they progress through the workshop, they learn how to support the mood of the story with lighting choices and  experiment with expressive lighting styles.

Learn How To Produce Content at NYFA

Learn the nuts and bolts of Line Producing in a hands-on, immersive 2-Day Online Line Producing Workshop. All the key elements of production management for film, television, and new media projects are included. Participants will use the latest editions of industry-standard Movie Magic Scheduling and Movie Magic Budgeting software to create their own film budget and stripboard schedule. Workshop instruction begins with a full description of the job requirements and responsibilities of a Line Producer.

Workshop DescriptionWorkshop Name: 2-Day Online Line Producing Workshop

Whether learning these skills for the first time or seeking to brush up on the latest software and production management techniques, this workshop will equip participants with the tools and knowledge to help line producers pursue their passion.

Additional instruction will include the creation of call sheets, production reports, and time cards, as well as how to properly handle insurance, overtime, set operations, crew hiring, union and vendor interaction, and the importance of tax credits and production incentives.

Participants will then create a budget using Movie Magic Budgeting software. During this process, they will gain an understanding of the following facets of Line Producing:

  • Units of pay
  • Fringe benefits
  • The role of contingency
  • The importance of the top sheet

Prerequisites – This is an introductory workshop, no prerequisites are required, nor is any prior experience expected.

Editors hold one of the most critical roles in the filmmaking industry, as filmmakers rely on an editor’s storytelling and digital editing skills to shape the narrative of their story in post production and to polish their films. In NYFA’s 2-day online Avid workshop, students get an introduction to the art of storytelling using Avid Media Composer.

This workshop is perfect for a range of students, from people who have no editing experience at all, to people who are looking to refine the editing skills that they already have. The digital editing workshop is beneficial to visual storytellers in entertainment and media, as Editors are not solely limited to the film industry, and also work in news, documentaries, television, and web series.

Workshop DescriptionWorkshop Name: 2-Day Avid Media Composer I

2-Day Avid Media Composer I is an introductory digital editing workshop designed to get new users up-and-running on AVID Media Composer. With step-by-step guidance in this course, students will develop the basic skills to edit a video project from start to finish while also expanding their understanding of the video editing process as a whole.

Some specific skills that students will learn in this course include:

  • the ability to create a project file
  • bringing in the source video and audio files
  • editing the sequence, adding titles, music, and basic effects
  • exporting a finished sequence

The objective of this course is to learn how to create an AVID project and create and export a 1-minute montage sequence.

Creative storytelling, Be a better storyteller

The key to any great piece of content is a story. Storytelling in your video will help you to engage your audience and achieve the results you want. Stories grab at our hearts. They engage our emotions. They make us feel something for the characters, and allow us to empathize or even imagine ourselves in their place. Creativity is how you grab your audience’s attention. Students will learn on how to create engaging content using the editing software as a tool to tell their stories.

Screening and Critique

Students screen their work for instructor feedback upon completion of the assignment. Constructive feedback is based on the student’s application of technical and aesthetic principles learned during workshop hours, and on how well those techniques were used to achieve the student’s goals. The instructor is an active film professional. Instructor feedback helps students understand what they are doing well and what they could make improvements on. This practice allows students to improve and make even more engaging content.
