Master of Fine Arts Degree in Game Design

Learn How to Be a Game Designer at NYFA

In NYFA’s Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Game Design program, students learn the tools, theory, and craft of visual storytelling in an interactive medium, building their confidence in programming and design. Through hands-on, project-based learning, MFA students study a range of topics from early digital games to highly-advanced 3D graphics. Students build a playable, portfolio quality game every semester in our Game Studio courses.

The MFA students round out their education with history, business, and ethics of video games.

Upon completion of the MFA in Game Design, students have expertise in game design, with a selection of their best game content for use in their personal portfolios. The MFA program is rigorous and challenging and is recommended for aspiring game designers with ambitious goals in interactive media.

The MFA in Game Design program is available at NYFA Los Angeles. In this program, students take advanced courses and workshops that teach the theories of game design and interactive storytelling. Students also master the process of creating 3D art for video games and and learn the concepts of agile development. The curriculum also includes:

Build Advanced Content Creation Skills at NYFA

NYFA’s Masters of Arts in Film and Media Production (MA) is an intensive, one-year graduate program with a strong focus on film theory, concept, and content creation. The degree is a combination of production and theory classes where students study film production, the psychology of film, cinema studies, and contemporary media.

Study International Entrepreneurial Producing at NYFA

In NYFA’s Online Master of Arts (MA) in Entrepreneurial Producing and Innovation program, aspiring Producers learn how to think and operate at an executive level in film and television. In this bold new program, students can expand their knowledge and develop advanced business, creative, leadership, and marketing skills while gaining a global perspective of the film, television, and other emerging entertainment industries.

Following our signature learn-by-doing approach, students get hands-on, practical training as they create an e-portfolio that contains the slate of projects that will be developed and produced during this 3-semester degree program. The program is a great fit for entrepreneurial-minded students who want to start their own media company or wish to create their own entrepreneurial path, from independent creators and influencers to high-level executives. As this program is designed to fit a virtual classroom experience, students from all over the world can attend and will use tools available to the students in their own locations.

Study Film Production and Theory at NYFA

In NYFA’s Master of Arts (MA) in Producing program, located at our Los Angeles campus, students learn key theoretical, creative, and aesthetics aspects of the entire producing process, such as how to identify or create viable media content, write a treatment, a budget and a business plan or TV show bible along with taking a closer look at key relationships and marketplace forces shaping the role of the producer. Throughout the program, students obtain the critical skills used in various entertainment fields including film festivals, events, film critique, and any curatorial environment alongside professionals and experts. Learn How to Make Films and Creative Content at NYFA

The New York Film Academy Online Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and Content Creation is a full-time undergraduate program. The program provides a comprehensive education in the technical aspects of filmmaking while teaching students the art of creating films and media projects independently, regardless of their locale.

The curriculum is designed to transform talented and self-motivated students into filmmakers who are leaders and experts in their craft.

Breakdown By Year

YEAR ONE

In semesters one through three, students are introduced to the foundational elements of filmmaking. Through online lectures, classwork, and homework, students explore the elements of creative storytelling while developing a knowledge base of the technical side of filmmaking. During each semester, students are tasked with making several projects specially designed to meet the needs of the online learner, culminating in their first sync-sound project. All students participate in an intensive series of courses in Visual Storytelling, Screenwriting, Producing, Camera, and Editing to prepare them for more advanced topics and their Intermediate Film production in Year Two.

YEAR TWO

In semesters four through six, the program concentrates on filming and completing the Intermediate Film, a project utilizing ideas, concepts, and practical skills learned throughout the first year. While the goal is to create a competent film, special emphasis is placed on teaching the online student to create content tailored to resources available to them about equipment, locations, access to talent, and crew. Students will also be introduced to other types of shorter-form digital content creation, along with an introduction to documentary filmmaking, where students will begin to understand the elements and many intricacies of non-fiction filmmaking.

YEAR THREE

As students in the Online Bachelor of Fine Arts Program in Filmmaking progress to semesters seven through nine, the main focus becomes that of the Thesis Film. Students continue to refine their Thesis Film screenplays to prepare for production. The final thesis is intended to reflect the student’s strengths as a filmmaker and should demonstrate all of the concepts learned throughout the course of study. Similar to semester 4, students learn to tailor their productions to the resources available to the online learner. In tune with this, students will take more advanced courses in digital content creation, editing, sound design, and marketing, preparing them for the world of filmmaking after graduation.

Learn How To Become a Filmmaker at NYFA

In the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Filmmaking at NYFA’s Film School, aspiring directors and filmmakers create films and multiplatform content, while building their confidence as directors and visual storytellers. As the goal for every BFA film student is to graduate with a tremendous amount of filmmaking experience and a reel, our students learn-by-doing, getting intensive on-set production training while creating their own films.

Our signature hands-on approach helps students gain advanced skills and knowledge in directing, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, and producing. Study Media and Production at NYFA

In NYFA’s BA in Media Studies (BA) undergraduate degree program, students build critical knowledge and skills in critical studies, communication, marketing, and interactive narrative. Throughout the program, students advance their technology, storytelling, and production skills, gaining in-depth knowledge and understanding of how media is spread and consumed. The BA in Media Studies is ideal for students who want to learn about digital production in the 21st century.

Our signature hands-on approach helps students gain advanced skills and knowledge in directing, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, and producing. The program aims to provide students with the framework to bring capitvating stories to life through film and content creation, and to emerge from our BFA program with strengthened communication, leadership, problem-solving, collaboration, and time management skills.

The BA in Media Studies curriculum at NYFA’s film school includes:

  • Intensive courses designed to enhance presentation, marketing, reporting, research, and writing skills, such as Marketing, Media & Society, Business of Emerging Media, Interactive Storytelling, Principles of Journalism, and more
  • Required Liberal Arts and Sciences classes such as History of Video Games, Psychology of Production, and Art History
  • Award-winning filmmaking faculty who actively work in the industry
  • The ability to access our equipment library with industry-standard cameras, light kits, sound gear, and more
  • Access to guest lectures with industry leaders in film, such as directors, actors, cinematographers, producers, and more

In NYFA’s Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Acting for Film degree, students can advance their learning in the core principles of acting. Through coursework and hands-on projects, students study and build skills in performance, literature, production, kinesthetic expression, and learn the business side of the industry. Explore the Visual and Performing Arts and Find Your Focus

In the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Entertainment Media degree program, students can explore creative disciplines that best align with their talents and interests before immersing themselves in the advanced study of a concentration. For students who know they want to pursue their interests in the visual and performing arts, but would like to explore different paths and have more exposure to a variety of crafts, before committing to a specific discipline to earn their degree, the BFA in Entertainment Media is the appropriate course of study. Students will also engage in a comprehensive liberal arts curriculum designed to complement their creative pursuits.

Concentrations offered include Filmmaking, Acting for Film, Broadcast Journalism, Cinematography, Documentary Filmmaking, Musical Theatre, Photography, 3D Animation & VFX, Producing and Screenwriting. For their chosen concentration, students will complete associated projects and exercises that gradually increase in complexity, which will allow them to create a portfolio or reel to assist in their pursuit of creative opportunities in their chosen craft following graduation.

The curriculum of NYFA’s Entertainment Media BFA program includes:

  • Practical applications courses to get hands-on experience in a selected variety of disciplines, including Filmmaking, Acting for Film, Screenwriting, Cinematography, Documentary Filmmaking, Producing, Broadcast Journalism, Musical Theatre, 3D Animation, and Photography
  • Classes that allow students to explore the fundamentals of visual and performing arts including Film History, Elements of Dramatic Narrative, Art History, Aesthetics of Photography, Media and Society, History of Broadcasting and more
  • One year immersion in a chosen curriculum concentration of any offered discipline
  • Additional liberal arts classes applicable to work and study in the entertainment arts
  • Award-winning faculty in each discipline who actively work in their respective fields
