The curriculum of the BFA program at NYFA’s Producing School include:

  • Producing courses that may include Film Production, Producer’s Craft: Creative, Business Plans, TV Show Bibles, Advanced Pitching Workshop and Script Collaboration I & II, dedicated to collaborating with a writer and coverage, as well as Entertainment Law and Business Practices and Business affairs

Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Screenwriting

Advance Your Screenwriting and Narrative Storytelling Skills

In NYFA’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (BFA) in Screenwriting, students write every day, working across a wide array of media, from Film and Television to Web Series, Podcasts, Games, and Comic Books.

Students will have courses on specific media, but also on specific skills, from plotting, to character, to electives in comedy writing or worldbuilding. Through hands-on projects, students will learn these media and skills by building a large portfolio of scripts that they can use to show the industry who they are as a writer and what they are capable of.

The Faculty of the Screenwriting Department are working writers, who bring years of experience in their field, as well as a broad knowledge base, and the day-to-day experience of seeing what is happening in the industry. Under the guidance of these teachers, students study the entire screenwriting experience from start to finish, and develop skills in plotting, writing, rewriting, pitching, critique, and collaboration.

Students who fully commit to the BFA program are given the tools and training to become disciplined writers, making it a great fit for high school graduates who want to pursue a creative pathway in writing for entertainment across the many media and genres available today. And with the extensive portfolio they will build, and our program capping Pitch Fest, they will leave the school with a first round of industry contacts and a wide array of material that showcases their skill.

Christina Weir

Christina Weir

MA in Mass Communications/TV Production, Emerson College.
Christina has worked in television, comics, film, and games for over two decades. Along with her writing partner (Nunzio DeFilippis), she was a writer/producer on HBO’s Arliss and wrote for the Disney Channel series Kim Possible. They have had features optioned at Hollywood Pictures, Process Media, and Humble Journey Films, and developed a video game at Sony and a TV movie at Oxygen. She and her partner have written for the comics New X-Men, Adventures of Superman, Batman Confidential, and Dragon Age, among many others. They created the comic franchises Bad Medicine (developed at Closed On Mondays with NBC), The Amy Devlin Mysteries (developed as a TV series at E!), and Frenemy of the State (co-created with Rashida Jones, optioned as a feature film by Imagine Entertainment/Universal Pictures.) For the Screenwriting Department in LA, she teaches Thesis Workshops, TV Pilot, Sequential Art, Transmedia, Interactive Narrative, Character Workshop, and Story Generation.

Brendan Hay

Brendan Hay

BRENDAN HAY is a writer and producer for TV, film, comic books, and more. Most recently, he was an Executive Producer and writer on Gremlins: The Wild Batch and Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai for WB Animation/Max. Previously, he was the showrunner of Dawn of the Croods and Harvey Girls Forever!, both for DreamWorks Animation/Netflix. Brendan has also written for several other series, including Robot Chicken (2x Emmy nominated), The Simpsons, and Star Wars Detours. Also, Hay was a (Peabody Award winning) headline producer at The Daily Show with Jon Stewart for most of the Bush administration, and a contributing writer to “America: The Book.” He has written pilots for Lucasfilm, WB Animation, Disney, ABC Family, DreamWorks Animation, Fox, and Nickelodeon. Brendan was once even called the “Best Svengali of Animation” by SF Weekly. He’s still not sure what that means, but chooses to take it as a compliment. On the print side, Hay has written comic books for DC Comics, Oni Press, and BOOM! Studios, and had his writing appear in magazines ranging from SPIN to Reader’s Digest. Brendan lives in Burbank, CA with his author/journalist wife, twins, a pair of pugs, and a cat named Gremlin.

Colette Freedman

MAT in Drama, Colgate University
Screenwriter, playwright, novelist, and actress. Colette has written the Lifetime film Sister Cities (Jacki Weaver, Alfred Molina, Stana Katic) and twelve other made-for-television films with her writing partner Brooke Purdy. Her feature films include Meli (starring Wendie Malick), And Then There Was Eve (2017 LA Muse Jury Prize Winner at LA Film Festival) and Miles Underwater. Colette is an internationally-produced playwright with over 35 produced plays, voted “One of 50 to Watch” by The Dramatists Guild. Plays include Serial Killer Barbie, The Affair, and Blind Spots (Encore Award 2018 Hollywood Fringe fest) and the upcoming Mozart2 the Musical and Amelia the Musical. She has written ten published novels, including the thriller The Thirteen Hallows (Tor Publishing) with #1 New York Times author Michael Scott; the YA book Anomalies with Sadie Turner (Select Books); and the legendary Steve Dorff memoir I Wrote That One Too (Backbeat Books). Freedman has co-produced several independent films, including Quality Problems (Freestyle Media, 2017 Best Feature, Women Texas Film Fest), Dancer in Danger (Lifetime) and Dangerous Cheaters (Lifetime). As an actress, she has worked on many television shows, including That 70s Show, The Young and the Restless, and JAG, as well as several independent films. For the Screenwriting Department in LA, she teaches Feature Workshops, Storytelling With Purpose, Script To Screen, Playwriting, and Scene Study.

David O’Leary

BA in Film and Cognitive Science, Vassar College
David is a film and TV writer/producer, whose recent credits include working as Consulting Producer/Writer on Season 3 of NBC’s “Law & Order: Organized Crime” in 2023. O’Leary also Created/Executive Produced the UFO drama series “Project Blue Book” starring Aidan Gillen (“Game of Thrones”), alongside Oscar-winning Robert Zemeckis, which ran on HISTORY for two seasons, aired in over 165 countries, and was the #1 new cable drama series of 2018/19. O’Leary has sold projects to TNT, Miramax, Universal TV, A+E Studios and others. As a film producer, he co-produced the reality-hopping sci-fi thriller feature “Parallel” (2020) released by Vertical Entertainment, and the Netflix supernatural hit film “Eli” (2019), both available on streaming now. David has worked as a Screenwriting and Producing Instructor at New York Film Academy (NYFA) in Los Angeles for over a decade. For the Screenwriting Department in LA, he teaches The Business of Screenwriting, Elements of Screenwriting, Genre Studies, Feature Workshops, and TV Pilot. For the Producing Department in LA, he teaches Marketing and Distribution.

Curriculum

The curriculum for the BFA at NYFA’s Screenwriting School includes:

  • Collaborative and engaging classes that teach students to write original scripts across multiple media, including Feature Films, Television, Short Films, and (depending on elective choices) Podcasts, Web Series, Comic Books, Games, Unscripted Stories (Reality or Docuseries), and Plays.
  • Skill-building courses that develop students’ writing skills across all of their work and all the media covered.  These courses include Elements of Screenwriting, Story Generation, Scene Study, Genre Studies, and electives like Comedy Writing, Building and Researching Your World.
  • Business courses that teach students about the entertainment industry and a writer’s role in it.  These courses prepare students for their careers after school and support internships to help them build skills and make contacts.
  • A digital license to Final Draft screenwriting software, as well as access to and instruction in editing software, camera, sound, and lighting equipment.
  • Exclusive guest lectures from industry professionals such as screenwriters, directors, producers, actors, and more.

BFA students must complete an industry internship in each of their final two semesters to help them develop their professional skills and build their network.

Learn How To Make 3D Animation & VFX Content

NYFA’s Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in 3D Animation & VFX degree immerses prospective visual artists in all aspects of the discipline. The program is an intensive practicum in visual storytelling, where students emulate the workflow and pipeline of a professional production by creating unique projects that gradually increase in complexity. Under the guidance of faculty with experience from major studios including Disney, Dreamworks, Universal, and Netflix, students develop practical skills in the latest software and technology.

In this hands-on program, students learn to incorporate fundamental elements of visual storytelling to their projects, dissecting principles and techniques rooted in the real world and discovering how they apply to a CG-generated world. This enables students to tell a cohesive narrative through words and images, giving them the opportunity to mimic reality and photography or create more stylized imagery. By the end of the program, students have a demo reel that demonstrates their talent and skill set.

Curriculum

The BFA students at NYFA’s 3D Animation & VFX School follow an intensive curriculum and achieve multiple learning goals. During their time at NYFA’s 3D Animation & VFX School, students:

  • Develop fundamental technical and creative skills, such as how real lights correspond to CG lights, as well as how real world cameras and lenses correspond to CG cameras and lenses, understanding the imperfections of photorealistic images
  • Learn how to bring inanimate objects or characters to life using the twelve basic principles of animation
  • Build skills in traditional drawing and sculpting in order to understand their fundamental concepts to digitally paint and sculpt
  • Study disciplines that include modeling (characters and environments), texture painting, look development, lighting and rendering, animation, rigging, MEL and Python scripting, compositing, dynamics, matte painting, and character design
  • Use industry standard software and equipment which may include Autodesk’s 3D Maya, MotionBuilder, Pixologic’s ZBrush digital sculptor, SideFX’s Houdini FX, Chaos Group’s V-Ray, and Foundry’s Nuke compositing and editing program

Learn to Perform on Stage and Screen at NYFA

NYFA’s groundbreaking Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Musical Theatre program offers aspiring performers real-world training and experience to pursue their creative goals in the performing arts. This four-year, eight-semester program merges the most prominent facets of the performing arts industry: the musical theatre stage and screen.

With a faculty of professionals who actively work in the Broadway, dance, voiceover, television, and film industries, students receive hands-on education in all performance-based mediums. Our program is uniquely designed to give students the opportunity to hone their skills in the central hub for launching musical theatre careers – New York City.

Throughout the program, students participate in a broad array of classes that focus on helping them find the actor within, expand their vocal and physical range, and guide them to learn and apply the emotional, physical, and technical work necessary for quality stage and on-camera acting. Audition and performance opportunities may include mainstage productions, readings and staged workshops of new works, open mic nights, scene presentations, masterclasses, showcases, in-class production work as well as movie musical exercises.

In NYFA’s Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Game Design program, students build fundamental knowledge in the art, technology, design, narrative storytelling, and business of video games. Through hands-on, project-based learning, students study the key elements that make up video game genres and how they are employed effectively to create a successful game.

Under the guidance and direction of professional game designers, students learn how to engage and immerse players in a gameplay experience, establishing a strong foundation of skills in playable system design, game writing, playcentric design, systems literacy, narrative design, original play mechanics, game analysis, and 3D art.

Students will create a playable, portfolio ready game per semester using industry best practices, including Agile and Scrum. By the conclusion of the BFA, students have a portfolio with their best work that demonstrates their growing creative and technical skills.

Curriculum

The BFA in Game Design program is offered at NYFA Los Angeles. During the program, students take advanced courses and practical workshops that teach them how to deconstruct any game experience. Students also learn game prototyping, playtesting, iteration, presentation, and collaboration, and the key elements that make up specific video game genres. As they create their own games, students practice writing code and creating art assets and game animations and how those inform the process of designing and producing games. The curriculum includes:

  • The framework to create a project per semester
  • Instruction and mentorship from our experienced faculty of professional Game Designers
  • Access to industry-standard equipment and software
  • The ability to attend exclusive guest speaker events with industry experts such as Game Designers, Filmmakers, 3D Animators, and and more

During NYFA’s Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) in Filmmaking at NYFA Los Angeles, students develop their voice as storytellers and shape their future in film, television, and entertainment. Associate of Fine Arts in Acting for Film

Learn Fundamental Audition and Acting Skills

In the Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) Degree in Acting for Film, offered in Los Angeles, students learn fundamental acting skills in scene study, voice, movement, audition technique, and improvisation. Through hands-on projects, students learn to work independently and collaboratively in a high-pressure creative environment while rapidly building knowledge and acting experience. Working under the guidance and mentorship of our experienced faculty of professional actors, students complete a variety of hands-on projects, building their reel.

Students also learn multiple modern and classical approaches to performance through coursework and rigorous projects, building their confidence and expertise in their strengths as performers. The objective of the AFA is to provide practical training in screen acting, making it a great fit for individuals who want to solely focus on their passion.

Learn How to Write a Screenplay at NYFA

In the Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) degree in Screenwriting program at NYFA Los Angeles, aspiring storytellers build a variety of creative and technical skills, completing a series of film and television scripts and projects. Through our hands-on approach, students hone their natural storytelling abilities and develop the techniques required to create compelling story structures, characters, conflict, and dialogue within their screenplays.

As many of our students wish to pursue ambitious goals in the competitive film, television, and entertainment industries, our students also learn to confidently pitch, produce, and sell their original projects.
